| Southern Railway Launches Three In-House Digital Solutions – e-TSR, RBMS and DOST | |
Staff-friendly applications to make train operations safer, smarter and paperless
General Manager Shri R.N. Singh launches these initiates from the Southern Railway Headquarters
Shri R.N. Singh, General Manager, Southern Railway, today launched three indigenously developed digital applications – e-TSR (Electronic Train Signal Register), RBMS (Railway Block Management System) and DOST (Delivering Occupational Safety on Track) – at a function held at Southern Railway Headquarters, today 24th July, 2026
Conceived and developed in-house, the three solutions together digitise some of the most safety-critical routines of day-to-day railway working – the recording of train signal events, the sanctioning and management of engineering blocks, and the protection of staff working on and near running lines. They mark a significant step in Southern Railway's transition from paper-based practices to a connected, real-time digital operating environment.
Speaking on the occasion, the General Manager observed that technology in the railways must ultimately serve the men and women who run the system, and that these applications have been designed around the needs of the field staff – the Station Master, the Controller, the Section Engineer and the trackman – to reduce drudgery, eliminate avoidable error and, above all, to safeguard lives.
e-TSR – Electronic Train Signal Register
The e-TSR replaces the conventional paper Train Signal Register maintained at stations with a secure electronic register. Train movement events are generated directly from data logger inputs and time stamps are captured automatically, substantially reducing manual error while saving time and paper.
The important aspects of this initiative are
●Digitisation of the conventional paper Train Signal Register.
●Generation of train movement events using data logger data, with auto-capture of time stamps.
●Fully compatible with Absolute, Automatic and Slot working systems.
●Facility for red-ink entries with corresponding entries in remarks.
●Provision for manual entry during fall-back conditions.
●Integration with the RBMS App for auto-generation of Line, Power and S&T block entries.
This e-TSR register eliminates manual paper working by auto capturing the events and their timings, making the job of Station Masters simpler and allows them to handle the trains more efficiently and to serve the public better.
RBMS – Railway Block Management System App
The RBMS App provides a complete, paperless digital solution for end-to-end management of railway blocks, from the initial request to final closure. A real-time workflow covers request, sanctioning, availing, extension and cancellation of Line, Power and S&T blocks, with algorithm-based optimisation of block planning.
The important aspects of this initiative are
●Platform-agnostic application that digitises and automates the entire block management process.
●Role-specific dashboards with role-based access and OTP authentication.
●MIS reports with a range of performance indices.
●Location and geo-fencing features, with inhibition of multiple Station Master log-ins.
●Flexibility in modifying block timings and archiving of completed blocks.
●Robust integration with e-TSR.
DOST – Delivering Occupational Safety on Track (Phase I)
DOST addresses one of the most serious safety concerns on the Indian Railways – the protection of staff working on or near running lines. The system correlates live train movement information drawn from the signalling network with the GPS location of field staff, and generates advanced critical alerts to warn them of approaching trains.
The important aspects of this initiative are
●Real-time graded alerts (Yellow and Red) with location-aware protection.
●Audio, visual, flasher and vibration alerts for reliable warning in noisy track environments.
●Multilingual voice alerts for ease of use by field staff.
●Incident reporting and emergency SOS facility.
●Train feedback and continuous connectivity monitoring.
Empowering Our People, Strengthening Railways
Taken together, the three initiatives are expected to deliver enhanced safety for Railway staff and train operations, smarter operations through reduced manual intervention, real-time awareness enabling better and faster decision-making, higher efficiency in block management, and a decisive step towards a safer, smarter and seamlessly connected digital railway.
The applications will directly benefit Railway Supervisors, Controllers, Station Masters, and Engineering, Signal & Telecommunication and Track maintenance staff across the Zone.
Southern Railway has consistently been a torch bearer of innovations to the Indian Railways, and the launch of e-TSR, RBMS and DOST reaffirms the Zone's commitment to harnessing technology in the service of safety, efficiency and the welfare of its workforce.
