Chennai Division is a major division among the 6 divisions of Southern Railway. It covers 8 districts in Tamil Nadu state and 1 district in Andhra Pradesh state. This division covers 699 kms. and 157 stations (117 kms. consists of 15 stations over A.P. State). The total freight traffic handled by the division both inward and outward is about 14.868 million tons per year. The division operates 837 trains daily including EMUs and the volume of passenger traffic is about 1.2 million. Nearly 213 trains cater to the need of commuters daily in the suburban section namely Chennai Beach - Tambaram - Chengalpet (MSB - TBM - CGL), Chennai Moore Market Complex - Arrakonam (MMC - AJJ), Chennai Moore Market - Gummudipundi - Sulurpet (MMC - GPD- SPE) and Chennai Beach - Velachery (MSB-VLCY).

Chennai Division accounts for about 31 %of the originating loading of Southern Railway. The major commodities loaded are coal, POL, fertilizers, food grains and sundry parcels. Movement of containers meant for export/import is given priority. As a part of passenger facilitation, 27 PRS Centres and 127 UTS have been opened at various locations.
