Welcome to EMU CAR SHED, Tambaram,
E.M.U (Electric Multiple Unit) workshop, Tambaram was commissioned in 1931 by the British era Private Railway Company S.I.R (South Indian Railways). It is one of the premiere electric loco/EMU workshops, located at 29km away from Chennai beach station in the route of MSB-CGL-VM section of Chennai Division. First Meter Gauge E.M.Us were maintained here. This EMU workshop had maintained various types of prestigious rolling stocks such as MG DC EMU, MG AC EMU, Thyristorised MG EMU, and MG Electric Locomotives from 1931 to 2004.
After Gauge Conversion, it is taking care of B.G EMU/MEMUs. BG EMU services were started from Madras Beach to Tambaram section in the year 1995. Consequently, services were extended up to Chengalpet, Kanchipuram, Tirumalpur, Arakkonam, Tambaram - Villupuram, Chennai Egmore -Pondicherry, and Pondicherry - Tirupati.
Presently, this unit is maintaining the Conventional BG AC EMU/MEMUs and latest BG 3-phase AC EMU/MEMUs.
This Unit takes care of the periodical overhauling of BG EMU/MEMU coaches of EMU car shed/TBM, VLCY & PGT. Further, minor maintenance schedules, up keeping as well as special Repairs (Both Electrical and Mechanical) of the BG EMU/MEMU Passenger Coaches belongs to EMU Car shed, Tambaram are carried out here.
EMU workshop, Tambaram has been accredited with ISO 9001:2015 (QMS), 14001:2015 (EMS), ISO 45001:2018 (OHSMS) & ISO 50001:2018 (EnMS) certifications for ensuring the quality, environmental, occupational health, and energy management.
