Thiruvananthapuram division was formed on 2nd October, 1979, carving out the Shornur-Cochin Harbour Terminus section from the erstwhile Olavakkot division and Ernakulam – Trivandrum Kannyakumari section of Madurai division.
The doubling of track between Kayankulam-Quilon Junction was completed in 1996 and between Quilon-Trivandrum during the year 2000. During the same year the Railway Electrification works between Shornur Ernkaulam was commissioned. The Electrification between Ernakulam to Trivandrum via Kottayam and Alleppey was completed in 2006.
