“Swachch Bharat Mission”


            Special Cleanliness Campaign “Swachch Bharat Abhiyan” was launched over this railway o­n 02/10/2014. ‘Shramdaan’ was the key theme under which the officer and staff took part in Cleaning activities with full vigour and enthusiasm. The areas covered are stations premises including tracks/yards office premises, colonies etc., MPs, MLAs, District Collector, Mayor, Municipal Chairman and other important dignitaries took part in Shramdaan.


            As a part of completion of o­ne year of “Swachch Bharat Mission” an intensive cleanliness campaign was launched o­n 02/10/2015.


            The campaign commenced with administering of “Swachata Shapa” by GM (at Head Quarters) and by DRMs/ADRMs/other officers at Divisional Officers/ station.


            Sant Nirankari Charitable Foundation (SNCF) in coordination with Railway Authorities actively participated in the cleanliness drive at Chennai Central and Ernakulum Jn. o­n this Railway. Further, two charitable organizations identified by Hob’ble MR, Adiparasakthi, Melmaruvathur (Melmaruvathur Station) and Shrine Basilica, Velankanni(Thanjavur) have also extended their cooperation. Visible improvement in cleanliness was noticed at these stations and was well appreciated by the travelling public.



            The highlights of the special cleanliness campaign conducted over this railway during the year are as under.


·GM and AGM led a Cleanliness Drive at Chennai Central.

·PHODs/HODs and other Officers of Headquarters/Divisions carried out the cleanliness campaign at nominated stations involving NGOs, NSS/NCC Volunteers and School Students etc. 

·A recycling plant was commissioned at Basin Bridge Station by Member, Mechanical.

·Mechanical Department organized an exhibition at Chennai Central o­n the themes of Clean Toilets, rodent and pest control, cleaning of the exterior and interior of coaches, clean pantry cars and functioning of bio-toilets.

·Banners exhibiting cleanliness messages were o­n display at all important stations.

·Frequent announcement o­n “Swachch Bharat” activities was also made through public address system.

·All the short term deficiencies were rectified immediately and certain other deficiencies where rectification involves rebuilding/repairs are being taken up o­n priority and will be completed shortly.

·Tree Saplings were planted in and around Station premises.

·Mass Tree plantation at Tondiarpet Diesel Loco Shed, Thiruvananthapuram, Ernakulam, Palakkad, Tiruchchirappalli, Madurai, Thiruvottriyur, Gummidipoondi and Tambaram o­n occasion of World Environment Day - 05.06.2015.

·Nukkad Nataks emphasizing the need of Cleanliness were staged at Madurai, Thanjavur and Kumbakonam Railway Stations.

·Rallies were organized at major stations involving School/College Students, Scouts and Guides, Railway employees, volunteers etc. (List of institutions/organizations enclosed)

·DRM flagged off walk-a-thon event at Tiruchchirappalli Junction.  300 Participants from St. Johns Ambulance Brigade, Trainees of Zonal Railway Training Institute (ZRTI), Tiruchchirappalli and RPF personnel were part of the event.

·.During the year 2015-16, 1042 drives have been conducted focusing o­n vital aspects such as maintenance of clean toilets, removal of encroachments, improving drainage and signages, clearing posters, painting of road kerbs and intensive cleaning of  station premises including tracks.

·During the year, intensive campaigns have also been conducted at colonies, Hospitals/Health units and office premises.
