Southern Railway records substantial growth in passenger and freight segment

27.660 Million Tonnes of Originating Freight loading achieved & Rs.2659.73 Crore revenue recorded in FY 2022-23 during April-December 2022

468 Million Originating Passengers were carried & Rs. 4689.46 Crore revenue registered in FY 2022-23 during April-December 2022

Southern Railway is progressively experiencing a robust growth in passenger and freight traffic as a result of concerted efforts. With respect to traffic handled as well as revenue generated, the zone has outperformed the previous year.


Freight Traffic


Southern Railway attained an Originating Freight traffic of 27.660 Million Tones (MT) during April-December 2022, an increase of 27.13% over the same period last year which stood at 21.757 Million Tones, also exceeding the Railway Board’s target of 26.030 MT by 6.26%.   The freight earnings of Rs.2659.73 Crores in April-December 2022, exceeded the revenue of Rs.1989.56 Crores registered during the corresponding nine-monthly period of April-December 2021 by 33.68% and also exceeded the Board’s target of Rs.2310.99 Crores for the period by 15.09%.


This growth in freight loading during the aforesaid period was fuelled by Coal (13.115 MT), Food Grains (2.198 MT), Fertilizers (3.031 MT) and POL products (3.812 MT).  While Coal registered an incremental loading of 1.074 MT over the Board’s target for the nine-monthly period from April to December 2022, Foodgrains, Fertilizers and POL recorded an increase by 0.738 MT, 0.489 MT and 0.833 MT respectively over the Railway Board’s target.


In the month of December 2022, Southern Railway recorded an originating freight loading of 2.846 MT and revenue from freight stood at Rs. 314.52 Crores. 


Passenger Traffic

Southern Railway, being a passenger-friendly zone, has been taking persistent efforts to handle the ever increasing traffic volumes by operating reserved/unreserved, passenger trains  and special trains during peak seasons and festivals.


Passenger traffic witnessed a significant growth in April-December 2022 (FY 2022-23) compared to the corresponding period of last financial year (2021-22) in all the segments, namely, reserved, unreserved and Suburban. The overall originating passenger traffic handled by Southern Railway doubled up during April-December 2022 and stood at 468.237 Million passengers compared to 225.612 Million passengers handled during the same period last year.  A revenue of Rs.4689.46 Crores was registered during the period from originating passenger traffic surpassing the Board’s target by 12.4%.


In the month of December 2022, Southern Railway registered an originating passenger count of 54.99 Millions across all segments of passengers compared to 40.01 Million in December 2021, an increase of 37.4%.  The earnings also rose up from Rs.375.53 Crores during December 2021 to Rs. 528.41 Crores during December 2022, an increase of 40.7%.
