Southern Railway, in its endeavor to provide better services to railway users as well as to curb ticketless train travel, has conducted intensive campaigns regularly against ticketless and irregular travel. In a bid to ensure railway passengers travel in trains in accordance with guidelines issued by the government and following Covid-19 protocol, intensive ticket checking drives were conducted in suburban as well as non-suburban / Mail Express trains.
During the period April 2021 to 12th October 2021, in Southern Railway, an amount of Rs 35.47 crores has been collected as penalties from passengers for various offences during traveling and the total number of cases is 7.12 lakhs. The cases include travel without tickets, irregular tickets and unbooked luggage. Rs 37 lakhs collected as penalties on 12th October 2021 is the highest single day collection so far.
Chennai Division collected Rs.12.78 Crores revenue which is the highest ticket checking revenue among the divisions during the period from April 2021 to 12th October 2021. Thiruvananthapuram Division realized Rs.6.05 Crores while Palakkad Division’s ticket checking earnings stood at Rs.5.52 Crores. Madurai, Salem and Tiruchirappalli Divisions’ ticket checking revenue stood at Rs. 4.16 Crores, Rs.4.15 Crores and Rs.2.81 Crores respectively.
In order to ensure strict adherence of COVID protocols at railway premises, ticket checking staff along with security personnel also imposed fines for not wearing masks. During the period from April 2021 to 12th October 2021, Rs.1.63 Crores was recovered as fine from 32624 defaulters.
