General Manager Inspects Perambur Carriage & Wagon Workshop

Shri John Thomas, General Manager, Southern Railway inspected the Carriage & Wagon Workshop at Perambur, Chennai today, 19th August 2021 for annual inspection. Shri Ravindra Babu, Chief Workshop Manager accompanied the General Manager along with Senior Officials of Southern Railway.

General Manager appreciated the initiatives taken for upkeep and maintenance of the workshop.  At Wagon Repair Shed he inspected the coach and wagon overhauling facilities and FIAT wagon that is used in Roll-on & Roll-Off (RO-RO) scheme.   General Manager  also took stock of the amenities and advised review measures.   

During his inspection, a new LHB Shed was inaugurated at the Workshop by Shri D.Seshadri, Sr.Technician who is retiring this month.  The new LHB Shed, commissioned at a cost of Rs.30 crores will be a dedicated facility to exclusively handle  Periodic Overhauling (POH) of LHB coaches.   The new LHB Shed is equipped with three  spacious bays for handling LHB coaches besides modern facilities such as epoxy flooring, Electric overhead traveling cranes, four tracks for movement of coaches, pits for under gear attention and an approach road to the Shed.

An Airless Centrifugal Shot Blasting Machine was also inaugurated at the Workshop.  The machine, commissioned at a cost of Rs.1.15 Crores will effectively cleanse Bogie frame and its components so as to remove all visible rust, mill scale and foreign matter during its POH schedule. The machine has Sturdy Blast Cabinet, Pneumatic operated door, Blow off arrangement for removal of abrasive and dust.

GM also inspected the display of various innovations, modifications and test benches for improving  the quality and reliability of coaches and wagons .  He appreciated the workshop engineers and staff for developing test benches in-house.

   General Manager sanctioned suitable award in appreciation of the excellent work done by Officers and staff of Carriage and Wagon works  in the field of quality improvement of coaches, staff welfare and technological advancement.

Carriage & Wagons Works, Perambur is a 165-year old premier workshop of Indian Railways. Recently, the workshop obtained the Integrated Management System Certification comprising of ISO 9001:2015 – Quality Management System, ISO 14001-2015 – Environmental Management System, ISO 50001:2018 – Energy Management System.  Carriage and Wagon works is also the first workshop of Indian Railways to achieve GREENCO rating (Bronze).
