GOC Workshop Flags off First Fully Overhauled LHB Power Car along with 301st RSP Order Wagon as well as Converted Coach for Railway Electrification

This week, the 93 year old versatile Central Workshops of Southern Railway located in Goldenrock area of Tiruchchirappalli added yet another feather in the crown of its golden history. For the first time, this workshop accomplished the complete overhauling of a LHB Power Car in Southern Railway by turning out LWLRRM 17855 of Salem division. Both diesel generator sets are overhauled here with the help of Original Equipment Manufacturers. Thorough attention is given to the electrical equipments, mechanical rolling components and air conditioning systems. Load testing is also done successfully. Complete renewal of flooring in luggage portion, full renewal of upholsteries and complete Polyurethane painting of coach exterior gave an aesthetic look to this first ever Power Car turned out from this workshop.

It is a matter of pride that this workshop bagged the order from Southern Railway Headquarters for overhauling of all 134 LHB Power Cars available in Southern Railway circuit in the next few years, which is a boon for the Diesel Periodical Overhauling Shop. Infrastructure in this workshop is now kept in a state of preparedness for undertaking the overhauling of AC Electric Locomotives of Southern Railway and awaiting the arrival of the first ever loco shortly for venturing into yet another new arena. This workshop is about to complete sixty years in the manufacturing of new wagons against Railway Board’s Rolling Stock Program (RSP) orders for operating freight trains across the country and in the manufacture of BLCS wagons (Flat type)  for CONCOR. During 2020-21, even amidst the Pandemic, this workshop reached triple century mark for the first time in seventeen years by the end of January 2021. 300th and 301st wagons were flagged off on 4th February 2021.

It is hoped that the fast pace of production will ensure that GOC workshops surpass its own previous best record of 322 wagons in a single financial year which was done in 2003-04.To augment productivity, this workshop has introduced rotary fixture for drilling holes in three sides of the centre sill of a wagon, which drastically reduced production time as well as usage of Cranes for turning two other sides of centre sill. A trial run of motorized universal underframe welding manipulator was also conducted successfully. Over and above, this workshop caters to the special demands of railway requirements. Against the order of four coaches, GOC workshop turned out the final coach which has been converted for departmental use in Railway Electrification Project successfully.

All these milestone coaches were flagged off in the presence of Shri.T.Venkatasubramanian, Principal Chief Mechanical Engineer, Shri. Shyamadhar Ram, Chief Workshop Manager, and Officers, Supervisors and staff of Goldenrock Workshop at function on 4th February.

Earlier, Shri. T. Venkatasubramanian, Principal Chief Mechanical Engineer, Southern Railway unveiled the newly installed heritage Narrow Gauge coach received from Western Railway near West Gate in the workshop premises. In the year 1862, the first ever Narrow Gauge Section was opened in Dabhoi -Miyagam section in the country. This is one of the coaches which served in that oldest NG section, now closed on account of Broad Gauge conversion. Approach area of the workshop premises in the West Gate which houses several other heritage rolling stock including Black Stallion MG Steam Locomotive and MG Steam Cranes has been spruced up by the introduction of ornamental structures and Lily Pond, all created with in-house resources for giving a pleasant outlook for the entry through the West Gate.

During his day long inspection of this workshop, the Principal Chief Mechanical Engineer inspected innovative efforts taken in production and overhauling processes at GOC. A few noteworthy innovations include the introduction of standard patches in the lower berths of sleeper coaches to mitigate the damages that occur in the corner area. This would bring down the cost of the replacement of rexine materials in the lower berths in the sleeper coaches overhauled here thus saving the precious money for the exchequer and ensure reduction in the pollution load. He also inaugurated IoT (Internet of Things) based energy management system in the workshop covering several work stations for improvised micro level monitoring of energy centres. Several gadgets and fixtures were also introduced in bogie overhauling, air springs and air brake testing areas.

As part of creation of Miyawaki type tree plantation in the Sewage Treatment Plant area of this workshop where the recycled water will be reused for reducing the carbon foot print of this workshop, 200 tree saplings were planted.
