The 72nd Republic Day Celebrations of Southern Railway were held today  (26.01.2021) at the Railway Stadium, Perambur, Chennai.  Shri John Thomas, General Manager, Southern Railway unfurled the National Flag and took the salute at the RPF Parade o­n the occasion in the presence of Shri Birendra Kumar, Principal Chief Security Commissioner & IG, RPFShri B.G.Mallya, Addl General Manager, Principal Heads of Departments, other officers and staff of Southern Railway.

While addressing the gathering, General Manager highlighted the achievements of the zone during the current year. He said that the year 2020 has posed challenges for Indian Railways in general and Southern Railway in particular, that, apart from the COVID-19 pandemic, Southern Railway had to bear the brunt of nature in the form of two cyclones, viz. NIVAR & BUREVI which hit the Southern regions of India during last year. He said that despite the adversities, the Railway personnel displayed their indomitable spirit and ensured a fast and smooth resumption of rail services, for which he thanked all the Railway Personnel for rising up to the occasion and showing the grit and courage which makes a railway person.

Every department of Southern Railway has proactively responded towards tackling the challenges posed by Covid pandemic. The General Manager was happy to share the news that Southern Railway’s concerted efforts against COVID 19 has resulted in the zone winning the SILVER medal in the prestigious SKOCH Awards under the category of Excellence in Response to COVID-19.

During the Republic Day Programme, Shri John Thomas, General Manager,  felicitated Ms. P. Anitha, Chief Ticket Inspector/SR, Indian Basketball player who has been awarded the prestigious Padmashri Award.  She is the first o­nly Indian woman to have played nine Basketball confederation championships continuously representing the national squad and has a record of 30 Medals in National Champions.

The General Manager also congratulated Shri Suji Kumar, Sub-Inspector, RPF/Carriage Works, Perambur who has been honoured with “Indian Police Medal”  for his meritorious Service. Shri John Thomas, General Manager also congratulated Shri. B. Baskar, Sr. Inspector, Civil Defence, Southern Railway who has been awarded the prestigious President of India Home Guards & Civil Defence Medal for his Meritorious service.

The 72nd Republic Day was also celebrated in other divisions and extra divisional offices all over Southern Railway with patriotic fervour.  A large number of Officers, staff and their families enthusiastically participated in these events. At Chennai, Shri P. Mahesh Divisional Railway Manager, Chennai Division unfurled the National Flag at Divisional Office, NGO Annexe, Park Town, Chennai. At Southern Railway Construction Office, Egmore, Shri Raveendra Babu Chief Administrative Officer, unfurled the National Flag. At the Railway Claims Tribunal Office in Chetput, Shri.S.K.Panday, Member Technical, RCT unfurled the National Flag whereas at the Railway Electrification Office, Shri Sameer Dighe, Chief Project Director (I/C), Railway Electrification, unfurled the National Flag and at the Joint Republic Day celebrations of the Perambur Workshops viz., Loco Works, Carriage Works and Electrical Works/Perambur Shri Arun Devraj, Chief Workshop Manager, Locoworks, unfurled the National Flag.
