Shri Narendra Modi Hon’ble Prime Minister of India dedicated the Electrified sections of Erode – Karur – Tiruchchirappalli and Salem – Karur – Dindigul to the nation at a function at Kelambakkam today, 06th March, 2019 in the august presence of Shri. Banwarilal Purohit, Hon’ble Governor of Tamilnadu, Shri. Edappadi K. Palaniswamy, Hon’ble Chief Minister of Tamilnadu Shri. Pon Radhakrishnan, Minister of State for Finance and Shipping, Dr. M. Thambi Durai, Deputy Speaker of Lok Sabha, Shri. O. Panneerselvam, Deputy Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Smt K.Maragatham, M.P participated.
The function was organised at Kanchipuram District today jointly by Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, and Ministry of Railways. The Honble Prime Minister laid the Foundation Stone for projects and dedicated Projects under the three Ministries. \

In a significant move by Government of India towards energy conservationreducing dependence on imported fossil fuel and saving revenue for the national carrier, complete electrification of Indian Railways is planned in the next four years. Railway Electrification will also help seam less Train operation by reducing running time. The 300 Route Kilometres Railway Electrification between Erode – Karur - Tiruchchirappalliand Salem – Karur – Dindigul section is completed at a cost of Rs. 321 crores. This will provide the people of Tamilnadu a Fast, Environment friendly and Comfortable mode of travel.

The Project was completed in a record time of 26 months much ahead of scheduled period of 30 months.
Benefits of Electrification of the section:
·Seamless train operation on electric traction between Erode-Karur-Tiruchchirapalli & Salem-Karur-Dindigul.
·Reduce running time due to better haulage capacity of electric loco.
·Reduce running time due to eliminated traction change requirement.
·Electrification of the section will save diesel fuel considering all coaching & goods train converting on electric traction.
·Reduction in GHG emission due to reduction in diesel consumption and gradual shift towards renewable energy.
