Shri Piyush Goyal Hon’ble Union Minister of Railways and Coal laid the foundation stone for installation of 200 pre-fabricated toilets over Southern Railway under CRS funds from Neyveli Lignite Corporation India Limited, and also laid the foundation stone for a new foot over bridge at Guindy Railway station at a function held in Chennai Railway Station, today 24th February 2019.
The Hon’ble Minister also dedicated 2 pedestrian subways at LC No.30 & 32 in Chengalpattu - Tambaram Section of Chennai Division, and the Renovated Booking Office and PRS Centre at Chennai Egmore Railway Station. The Hon’ble Railway Minister also inaugurated the new Booking office at the Second Entry of Guindy Railway Station at the function in Chennai Central in the presence of Hon’ble MPs Shri K.N.Ramachandran, Dr J.Jayavardhan, Dr.V.Maitreyan, Shri A.Navaneetha krishnan, Shri S.R.Raja, Shri K.S.Ravichchandran, Shri R.K.Kulshrestha, General Manager, Southern Railway, Shri Rakesh Kumar, Chairman and Managing Director of Neyveli Lignite Corporation, Head of Depts from Southern Railway, Officers, Staff and Union representatives.
Welcoming the gathering, Shri R.K.Kulshrestha listed out the achievements of Southern Railway during the last two years.

Speaking on the occasion, Shri Piyush Goyal, Hon’ble Union Minister of Railways and Coal paid homage to the sacrifices of the Pulwama attack Martyrs and said that Terrorism shall be eliminated by the unity of the people. He lauded the Hon’be Prime Minister’s Kisan Sanman Nidhi Vakas scheme which was launched in Chennai today. He added that nearly 12 crore farmers will be benefitted with this.
Speaking about the projects that he was inaugurating/dedicating and laying the foundation stone for, the Honble Railway Minister said that Mission Swachata is receiving all the attention in Railways and that passengers must immediately bring any unclean toilet/station in their journeys to the notice of the Railway Officials who will set right the system.
As step forward, to keep cleanliness of the circulating area Toilet facilities are also being provided at 200 railway stations in Tamilnadu at a cost of Rs.52 crores supported by NLC India Limited under Corporate Social Responsibility scheme.
Regarding the provision of FOB at Guindy and Pedestrian Subways provided in place of Level crossings 30 and 32 in Tambaram – Chengalpattu section will help the passenger safety, he said. He also expressed happiness in Railways providing upgraded passenger Amenities at Guindy and Chennai Egmore Railway Stations.
The Hon’ble Railway Minister said that Indian railway has eliminated all unmanned level Crossings in the Broad gauge route and will be further focusing on elimination of manned level crossing in main routes to ensure speed, safety and security. The Minister added that Indian railway is committed to provide smooth, comfortable and safe means of transport to the people.
Speaking of the train set made by Integral Coach Factory under make in India campaign the Hon’ble Railway Minister said he is proud of the persons behind the train set and Indian Railway Engineers. Talking about another jewel in the power sector, namely, Neyveli Lignite Corporation, the Minister said that in the last 4 years the the capacity of NLC has gone up by 80 % and growth has doubled in the last 5 years. He said that GST helped the reduction of power tariff in Tamil Nadu.
Due to the water situation in Chennai, the Hon’ble Minister has directed that the supply of drinking water for Chennai City from NLC be doubled.
The Railway Minister said that under the dynamic and visionary leadership of the Hon’ble Prime Minister various developments are taking place in the country. He said that when both the State and Central Govts join together the growth will have the power of a double engine.
Indian Railway is committed to serve the people, by providing more connectivity, providing more services, creating more job opportunities, paving path for the growth and development of the nation. He hoped that the people of Tamilnadu will also prosper with the growth of Indian railways.
