53rd ANNUAL CIVIL DEFENCE RAISING DAY CELEBRATIONS
OF SOUTHERN RAILWAY HELD AT CHENNAI
The Civil Defence Organisation of Southern Railway successfully conducted its yearly Annual Civil Defence Training Programme at Chennai which culminated with the 53rd Annual Civil Defence Raising Day Celebrations at Railway Institute Ground, Perambur on 7th December 2018.
Shri P.K.Mishra, Additional General Manager, Southern Railway was the Chief Guest at the Civil Defence Raising Day function. Speaking on the occasion, the Additional General Manager appreciated the work done by the volunteers of the Southern Railway Civil Defence Organisation.
During the programme, Shri P.K.Mishra, Additional General Manager, released the Civil Defence Manual for the Southern Railway Civil Defence Volunteers in the presence of Shri R.Mukund, Addl Divisional Railway Manager, Chennai Division, who is also the Emergency Officer of Civil Defence for S Rly Chennai Region, Shri S Subramani, Dy General Manager who is also the Controller of Civil Defence Organisation of Southern Railway and Shri R.Murali, Senior Asst Dy General Manager.
Civil Defence is a volunteer-based emergency response organization. Civil Defence operates at national level under the Department of Defence. Emergency Rescue and Relief Services including Medical relief are organised not only during times of war, but also during Natural Disasters, Calamities and Accidents through the local authorities in each area throughout the country. The Civil Defence Officer acts as the link between the volunteer, community, local authority and the organisation nationally.
In Railways, Civil Defence Organisation is dedicated to protecting the lives and providing rescue and relief measures to the civilian population during war time, natural calamities and especially during train accidents. Every year, the Civil Defence Raising Day is celebrated on the 6th of December. The Southern Railway Civil Defence Volunteers numbering 250 including lady volunteers are drawn from various divisions of Southern Railway. They are given training based on the changing needs of Disaster Management during the yearly refresher course during the Raising Day programme.
