SWACHHTA HI SEWA – CLEANLINESS FORTNIGHT PROGRAMME
The cleaning programme for the fortnight upto Gandhi Jayanthi - Swachhta Hi Sewa - Swachhta Pakhwara is being observed from 15th September 2018 to 02nd October 2018. A range of programmes have been organised to mark the event.
The fortnight of cleaning programmes started on 15th September 2018 with Shri R.K.Kulshrestha, General Manager, Southern Railway administering the Swachhta pledge to all zonal officers and Divisional officers at Chennai Central Railway station as part of Swachh Awareness campaign. A Bio-Toilet Model at Chennai Central station to sensitize the public on functioning of Bio-Toilets was also opened during the programme. It was a proud moment for Chennai Central when the Green Building certification was given by Shri. C.N. Ragavendran, Chairman, IGBC/Chennai Chapter at Chennai Central Railway station.
The General Manager, Divisional Railway Manager, Zonal and Divisional Officers and staff participated in Shramdaans at various Stations and colonies. In Chennai area, shram daans were organised at Pulianthope Railway Colony on 17th September 2018 and at Nungambakkam on 21st Septemer 2018.
In all the major stations, Coaching/Wagon depots, Loco sheds of Chennai Division, the Swachhta pledge was administered to all railway employees. Nukkad nataks , Mime shows, awareness rallies were organized on cleanliness awareness at Chennai Central, Chennai Egmore, Tambaram, Arakkonam with active participation of volunteers from NGOs (250), school children(300), colleges students(300), scouts & Guides(150). Painting competitions were organized at railway schools (Jolarpettai & Perambur) and Basin Bridge Coaching Depot on “Theme of Cleanliness”.
Intensive cleaning of all Major stations & other stations, Depots, sheds and Hospitals were taken up during the drive period. In all A1 & A category stations one platform was chosen as “Zero waste” , ie litter free platform and cleanliness maintained. The cleanliness drive was monitored by nominated officers throughout Chennai Division.
As a part of Swachh Railgaadi programme on 20th and 21st September, 2018 intensive cleaning of primary maintenance trains of Chennai Division were undertaken by nominated officers and supervisors.
On Community Day/ Sewa Diwas on 22nd September 2018, Mass Shramdan was carried out by NGOs - Sant Nirankari at Chennai Central Station, Stella Mary’s College at Chennai Egmore station, Arakkonam Rail Passenger Association at Arakkonam, Madras Christian College at Tambaram, Kingston college at Katpadi, St. Jain College group at Mambalam, etc
As a part of Swachh Ahar programme on 25th and 26th September 2018 intensive cleaning of canteens, vending stalls, pantry cars were under taken. Inspection of food and water samples also done.
During Swachh Neer programme on 27th and 29th September 2018 inspection of all water installations, sources of water supply at Railway Stations. Colonies, Health units, Schools were done. Special thrust was given to maintain cleanliness of toilets blocks in all railway stations during the drive period.
On 29th and 30th, intensive cleaning of toilet blocks were taken up in all stations and coaching depots. Awareness rallies against open Defecation were conducted in areas adjoining major stations to sensitize the public.
On 2nd October, 2018, the Birth Anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, many programmes are planned in various divisional headquarters as well as Stations in Southern Railway, promoting Cleanliness. In Chennai Division, cleaning programmes are planned for Chennai Central, Chennai Egmore and Tambaram station with the help of voluntary organisations on 2nd October 2018.
