Shri R.K. Kulshrestha, General Manager, Southern Railway conducted a meeting with Hon’ble Members of Parliament (Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha) of Chennai Division at Southern Railway Headquarters Office today. 

Hon’ble MPs Shri V.Elumalai, Dr.J.Jayavardhan, Shri T.G.Venkatesh Babu, Dr P.Venugopal, Shri S.R.Vijayakumar, Shri S.R.Balasubramoniyan, Shri R.S.Bharathi, Shri TKS Elangovan, Dr K.Kamaraj, Smt V.Sathyabama, Shri S Selvakumara Chinnayan, and Shri A.K.Selvaraj, Hon’ble MP's participated in the meeting. 

Shri Naveen Gulati, Divisional Railway Manager, Chennai Division, Shri U.Subba Rao, Divisional Railway Manager, Salem Division, Principal Heads of Departments of Southern Railway and Chennai and Salem Divisional Officers attended the meeting.

The General Manager welcomed the dignitaries and appraised the MPs about the progress of several important works in Chennai and Salem Divisions.

The Hon’ble MPs requested for early completion of projects, enhancement of passenger amenities at stations and provision of stoppages of trains, etc., in their respective constituencies. General Manager informed the issues will be examined case by case, and efforts will be taken to take up the works requested within the Zonal Railway purview.  The issues beyond Zonal Railway’s purview will be brought to the notice of Railway Board for consideration.


Chennai Division carries around 15 lakh passengers (Suburban – 11.5 lakhs & Non-Suburban – 3.5 lakhs) per day. The various developmental works highlighted during the meeting are listed below:-  

ØIn addition to Tambaram section, we have added 12 car EMU upto Arakkonam, Tiruttani and Gummidipundi increasing the passenger carrying capacity.

Ø4 New cross sector services from Chengalpattu to Gummidipundi in addition to already engaged cross sector services from Velachery – Arakkonam, Chennai Beach-Gummidipundi.

ØAfter Bus-strike, we have introduced 17 special EMU services due to increase load.

Ø1269 special trains have been run so far this year to clear extra rush. This is an improvement of 16% over last year.

ØTambaram to Sengottai and back new train services have been introduced.

ØMajor yard remodeling have been done at Arakkonam, resulting in extended PF to 24 coaches and new circulating area, FOB with entry is being provided.

Ø2 nos. of new FOB at 02 stations (Hindu College &Kavaraipettai) have been provided. Work at 15 stations is in progress including 03 widening. Same be commissioned before 31.03.2019.

Ø10 nos. of LUS have already been commissioned. Work is going o­n for ROB-38 & RUB-12 including 05 Pedestrian Subways.

ØWidening of FOB is under progress at 02 stations (Chennai Egmore &Mambalam).

Ø2 Nos. of new Escalators (Chennai Egmore &Katpadi) and o­ne Lift (Katpadi) have been commissioned. Work is in progress for 11 Escalators (Katpadi –1, Chennai Egmore-4, Chintadripet -3, Chepak-1 & Mambalam-2) and 03 Lifts (Katpadi-1 & Arakkonam-2).

ØWork have been awarded for  Emergency Medical Centres at Chengalpattu &Mambalam taking the total emergency Centres functioning in Chennai Division to 07 stations.

ØA drive has been launched to revamp all the existing toilets under SwachhPakhwada in addition to large scale cleaning dive at all stations.

ØBattery Operated vehicles  for passengers with nominal charge have been provided at Chennai Central & Egmore stations.

Ø05 Food Plaza and 06 Fast Food units including o­ne Tourism Centre, o­ne Jan Aahar, o­ne VRR, 03 Cell Kitchens are already provided. Work at 21 more locations at 14 stations is in progress.

ØNew freight traffic Road-railer transportation has been introduced between Melpakkam (Chennai Division, Southern Railway) and Palwal (Delhi Division, Northern Railway). First service commenced o­n 22.09.18.

ØWork for provision of LED based train arrival/departure platform coach indication boards at 11 stations is in advanced stage.

Ø1.9 MW & 250 KW Solar Plants using PF shelter is under commissioning at Chennai Central  & Chennai Egmore respectively.

ØSolid waste treatment plant of 3.25 tonnes per day is being commissioned which will generate 290 unit of electricity per day besides disposal of waste.

ØHigh Roof Shelter connecting Moore Market Complex to Chennai Central and covered pathway are under consideration. Circulating area is at MMC is being redeveloped for smooth pedestrian movement taking into considered the new subway provided by CMRL.

ØNew Booking Office have been commissioned at Tiruvottiyur & Perambur Loco Works stations and one additional Ticket Counter has been provided at Minambakkam with MPLADS. Work is in progress for 2nd Booking Office in Walltax Road side in Chennai Central including Avadi&Pattabiram Stations.

ØRecently, Chennai Central station has been certified as ‘Green Building’ by Indian Green Building Council in appreciation of various environmental friendly and energy saving measures..

ØChild Help Desks have been set up at Chennai Central & Chennai Egmore under the joint initiative of Ministry of Women and Child Development and Ministry of Railways.  These Help Desks are manned by child experts for receiving the children, rehabilitating them and restoring them back to their parents.  Five more locations in Chennai Division have been identified for setting up of such Child Help Desks and selection of NGOs for the same is under process with Ministry of Women & Child Development.

ØA beautification drive has been launched in a number of stations.  A large number of works are being/have been carried out at Chennai Central, Chennai Egmore, Katpadi and Arakkonam railway stations.  To name a few – Wall Garden, Heritage paintings, painting of places of interest, concealing of cables, etc have been carried out at Chennai Central; cladding works have been carried out at Katpadi and similar work will be carried out at Arakkonam.

ØFree Wi-FI facilities have been provided at 7 (seven) stations of Chennai Division.

ØDivyang facilities have been provided at 14 stations.  Works for construction of toilets for Differently Abled Persons are o­n in 120 stations.

Ø86 Water Vending Outlets at 13 stations have been provided.

ØChennai Central station has been face lifted with colourful illumination to welcome the tourist during “Paryadan Parv” celebration.

ØA fortnight long special Cleanliness Campaign ‘Swachhta Hi Seva’ (Swachhta Pakhwara) started o­n 15th September, 2018 to 2nd October, 2018.  Cleaning drive has been launched in almost all stations. Awareness Campaign is also carried out. Many Schools / Scouts & Guides / NGOs / Volunteers / Institutions / Service Organisations participated in this campaign at various places.  Such Organisations / institutions contributed their efforts in cleaning as well as creating awareness regarding the importance of cleanliness. Railways look forward for continuous public support in maintaining the cleanliness at Railway premises.
