Performance Highlights of Southern Railway

ØGross earnings of Southern Railway during the current financial year 2018-19 upto July 2018 is Rs.1432 crore which is 5.6% higher than the corresponding period of the previous year.

ØAbout 224 million passengers have travelled upto July 2018  which is 4.7% higher than the corresponding period of 2017-18.

ØFreight loading has witnessed significant growth.  In the first three months of the current financial year, Southern Railway  achieved an originating loading of 9.377 MT which is 49% more as compared to the same period of last year. 

ØOut of 9.377 M.T. loading, 5.77 M.T of coal has been moved to various Power Plants. By which, the originating Freight  earnings up to June 2018 has gone to Rs.790 crores which is more by 19% surpassing the Board’s target of Rs.665 crores and is more by 56% compared to previous year. 

ØSouthern Railway has captured new streams of freight traffic of commodities viz.,  Gypsum, Charcoal, Met coke and Metal scrap to the tune of 0.178 million tonnes with the freight earning of Rs.22.81 crores during April – June 2018 and more revenue is expected in the coming days.

ØPredominantly a Passenger traffic zone, to ease congestion Southern Railway operated 851 reserved special trains and  909 unreserved special trains up to June 2018 to clear waitlisted passengers.  Diwali specials, o­nam specials and Velankanni specials are also announced to ease the festival rush.

ØA total of 1449 coaches were added by various trains and creating an additionally o­ne lakh nine thousand berths in first quarter. Coaches have been augmented to 13 trains permanently and 491 extra coaches were also temporarily augmented.

ØDuring the current year, Southern Railway introduced new trains viz., Humsafar Express from Tambaram to Bhagat Ki Kothi,  Uday Express from Coimbtore to Bengaluru and two Antyodaya Express trains - o­ne from Tambaram To Tirunelveli and o­ne more from  Kochuveli to Mangalore Junction.

ØPremium tatkal quota has been provided in 257 trains which resulted in additional revenue of Rs.46.50 Cr. 

ØTo ease the congestion in Ticket counter,  automatic ticket vending machines have been installed at various stations which evoked a very good response and currently o­n an average 1.8 lakh passengers per day using this facility.

ØThe number of passengers buying tickets through the UTS o­n mobile has also increased. 

ØSpecial Heritage steam voyage train services have been introduced between Mettupalayam to Coonoor with value added service  o­n 31.03.2018 and operated upto 24.06.2018.

ØAs part of improving the railway stations to world class standards, Southern Railway has identified Chennai Central, Thiruvananthapuram, Kozhikode, Mangaluru and Ernakulam Jn for development as World Class Stations.

Ø Southern Railway has also developed 48 Model stations and 47 Modern stations as per the new standards of passenger amenities. 

Ø12  Escalators  and 11 lifts have been commissioned during 2017-18 and  30 more escalators and 28 lifts are planned to be commissioned during 2018-19.

ØAC paid waiting halls are provided at 16 stations,  Battery Operated Cars are provided in 15 stations, Emergency Medical Assistance booths are provided in 24 stations, App based Cab services has been provided at 6 stations.

Ø To provide clean and potable drinking water to the passengers, 175 Nos. Water Vending Machines have been installed at various stations.

ØDuring 2017-18, doubling project of Villupuram-Dindigul and Tiruchy-Tanjavur have been completed and newly gauge converted sections of Pollachi-Podanur, Karakkudi-Pattukottai and Sengottai-Punalur been commissioned . Korukkupet-Tiruvottriyur 4th line has also been completed.

ØDuring the current year, it is planned to commission the gauge conversion of Thiruvarur-Tiruthuraipoondi, Tiruthuraipoondi-Pattukottai, Madurai-Usilampatti section and doubling of Guduvancheri-Singaperumal Koil, Mecheri Road-Mettur Dam and commissioning of new line between Milavitaan-Melmarudur and 3rd and 4th line of Chennai beach-Korrukkupet section.

ØAs part of “Traffic Facility” work, Tambaram has been developed as a Coaching Terminal and a new Antyodaya Express started running from Tambaram Terminal.  

ØIn the Freight front, 2 new Goods sheds and 2 private sidings have been added in Southern Railway, apart from augmentation of capacity of o­ne Goods shed  and o­ne siding.  Further, 4 IBSs and a new crossing stations have been provided.    The goods shed at Sengottai has been opened for handling full rake of all goods traffic.  Under “Traffic Facility Works” straightening of roads 1 & 2 and extension of PF Nos.1 – 3 to 24 B at Arakkonam has been commissioned.

ØElectrification of 73.97 kms. between Karur-Dindigul section and has been commissioned. 

ØDuring this year upto July ’18, as part of Safety related work,  153 Track km. of Track renewal have been completed.  Apart from this 21 Nos. of bridge rehabilitation works completed and 5 Nos. of ROBs have been commissioned for enhancing safety of travelling public.

Ø This year  80 Unmanned Level Crossings out of 185 Nos and   8 Manned LCs upto July 2018 have been eliminated.  Remaining 105 UMLCs will be eliminated by Sep.2018.  Gate Mitra have been provided at all Unmanned Level Crossings round the clock to counsel the road users.

Ø 21 Bridges have been rehabilitated this year upto July 2018 of which 5 are major bridges. We have recently introduced  Under water inspection with remote operated robotic vehicle for the first time in Indian Railways for enhancing safety of bridges.  Like wise, we have conducted Drone survey of 3 mega bridges of Nethravathi, Cauvery and Pamban bridges.

ØSouthern Railway introduced LHB coaches in 20 trains. Chennai Central-Mysuru and Chennai Central-Coimbatore Shatabdi trains have been upgraded under ‘Project Swarn’.  Anubhuthi coaches  in Chennai-Mysore from 12.01.2018  and Chennai-Coimbatore Shatabdi expresses from 26.01.18 have become very popular. Model rake with modern facilities have been inducted in Venad express and has been appreciated by public.

Ø12 trains consisting of 16 rakes of LHB coaches have been modified to work in HOG system in Southern Railway wherein Power drawn from Overhead equipment is being used for working of coach Air-conditioning & Lighting in passenger compartments, instead of using Diesel Power cars adopted to improve better passenger comfort, with huge savings in usage of Diesel, thereby contributing to reduction in foreign exchange expenditure & carbon emission

ØGOC workshop has obtained Greenco ‘Gold’ certification and Chennai Central station has been recommended for Greenco certification.  Based o­n the previous performance, Golden Rock workshops have bagged the order of Rs.306 crores for manufacture of 1035 BCS - 25 Ton Axle load container flat wagons.

ØFor Heritage fans, Chennai Division of Southern Railway ran its First Heritage special for the Public o­n Sunday 27.05.2018 between Chennai Egmore and Kodambakkam. Two more such trains services were run o­n June 3rd and June 10th 2018. This service was extremely popular among the Steam Loco Fans. With this running, EIR 21 is the oldest working Steam locomotive in the World along with EIR 22. Southern Railway is processing for incorporation of EIR-21 in Guinness World of Records through Railway Board. 

ØFollowed by Chennai Division, similar heritage run of EIR-21 is planned in Thiruchchirappalli Division also between Pondicherry and Chinnababusamudram during Aug 2018. Two trials were already conducted successfully in this section.This Heritage run is proposed to be extended for all Divisions

ØSouthern Railway has surpassed the target in fitment of Bio toilets in Coaches for the year 2017-18.16776 bio-toilets have been provided in 4758 coaches so far. It is planned to provide bio-toilets in all coaches before 31.03.2019. In Southern Railway there are green corridors namely Rameshwaram-Manamadurai, Tiruchirapalli-Manamadurai, Madurai-Manamadurai, virudunagar-Manamadurai and Shoranur-Nilambur sections.

ØVarious Energy Efficient equipments/fittings viz. LED lamps, energy efficient BLDC fans, super efficient air conditioners etc. have been provided to conserve energy.100% LED light fittings have been provided in all the Railway stations and service buildings in Southern Railway.

ØAll India RPF Security Helpline No.182 is functional in Southern Railway from Dec.2014 o­nwards to deal the complaints instantly.   During the year 2017-18, 920 messages for help were received from the passengers and the same were redressed o­n real time basis.   All Women Facilitation Centre is functional at Chennai Central, Chennai Egmore, Trichy, Coimbatore, Madurai, Calicut and Trivandrum Railway station to help lone women passengers.

Ø100% Transparency and fair dealing in Public procurement is ensured through 100% e-procurement and e-auctioning.  o­nline procurement through Government e-Market Portal and Southern Railway has procured the items for value around 12 Crs. upto July 2018.  Southern Railway is the highest achiever among Indian Railways towards GeM procurement.

ØFor a hassle free train services in signalling arrangements, Southern Railway has eliminated old Signalling System of Lever Frames, Semaphore & Neal’s ball token instruments from entire Broad Gauge Passenger Carrying network and 100% track circuiting is provided in all stations yards to enhance safety.  Interlocking of LC gates has been carried out in 42 stations and  33 stations Datalogger/RTU were provided. 

ØProvision of Wi-Fi at all A1, A and B category station was announced in the Railway Budget and we have provided wi-fi facility at 21 stations in 2017-18 and 15 stations in 2018-19.  Integrated Surveillance Security System is provided in 14 stations and CCTV cameras provide at 6 stations.  CCTV cameras provided at 6 stations under Nirbhaya Fund.

ØStation premises, platforms have been kept clean by engaging cleaning contracts duly utilizing new modern gadgets.  We have outsourced the cleaning activities in 64 railway stations and for  E category stations, we have sanctioned imprest cash to the station managers for keeping the stations clean and tidy.  Not o­nly stations, but also coaches have also been kept  clean by o­n Board House Keeping contracts who travel in the coaches and maintain the cleanliness in the coaches and toilets.  ‘Coach Mitra’ service is introduced in non-OBHS trains maintained by SR depots and running within the zone.

ØDuring the 2017-18, through o­nline Indent Recruitment Management Portal System, Indents for 528 ALPs, 705 Technicians and 2979 Erstwhile Group ‘D’ have been placed o­n RRB/MAS and TVC.   Financial Assistance to the extent of Rs.8 crores has been distributed to Railway men under various Scholarships/Schemes of Central Staff Benefit Fund during this year.  

ØOn Line Pass Application Module for Pensioners and Employees at Headquarters Office was inaugurated o­n 06.08.2018 for the benefits of staff and Pensioners.  Employee Grievances Redressal Management Information System is developed by Chennai Division which facilitates the employees to register their grievances by sending SMS, by giving missed calls, by logging in websites and by personal visit to staff Facilitation Centre.  Apart from this, General Manager, Southern Railway has also been personally hearing the staff grievances o­n every Thursday in my office for its speedy redressal. 

ØHeadquarters Hospital Perambur has been pioneering in tertiary health care over Indian Railways. During the year2017-18, 621 cardiothoracic surgeries, 184 Neuro-surgeries, 41 Vascular Surgeries and 2179 Cardiology based interventions done in the Super-specialty HQ Hospital.

ØState of art - Artis Zee Cath Lab from M/s Siemens Healthcare Ltd. is being installed at an approximate cost of ₹ 4.64 crores at RH/PER. This will facilitate commencing of Primary Percutaneous Coronary Intervention (PCI) facilities which is the standard of care in Cardiology during the Golden Hour of developing cardiac problem in the patient. A ceiling mounted Digital Radiography Unit from M/s Carestream at an approximate cost of ₹ 1 Crore is being installed at Railway Hospital, Madurai.

ØWe have also conducted Health Checkup for 76596 out of 80,675 employees (94.4%) under the Annual Wellness Awareness Checkup as o­n 31.03.2018. This year till 07.08.18, 11380 (13.3%) have been examined.

ØMedical Department has also conducted 1062 cleanliness related campaigns for improving the state of cleanliness in Railway areas under Swachh Rail Swacch Bharat Abhiyan.

ØRPF personnel are escorting 370 trains and recently formed Sakthi Padai consisting of women RPF for escorting EMU services.  They also protect the railway properties in the stations, workshops and railway premises.  During 2017-18, 515 criminals have been arrested in 441 cases and railway property worth about Rs.14 lakhs have been recovered

ØAbout 60000 persons were fined for littering in railway premises.  o­n 2623 occasions, RPF have retrieved abandoned/left over passenger belongings containing, cash, jewels and handed over to its owners. 

ØShri S.Satish Kumar, Weightlifter, Ms. K. Suirya, Athlete and Ms.Rajapriyadarshini in Women Basketball   participated in the XXI Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, Australia Shri S.Satishkumar  won the Gold in Weight lighting for the second consecutive games.

ØSRWWO and their team actively participated in various activities towards the welfare of Railway employees and their family members. In the recent past it has taken initiatives in helping patients at Railway Hospital and is assisting special children at ‘Ashraya’.
