Railways regrets fatal Incident Onboard Millennium Express

Indian Railways deeply regrets to announce the unfortunate passing away of a passenger. Mr. Ali Khan (60), on 18.06.2024 while undergoing treatment after getting injured in a mishap during his journey on 15.06.2024.  Mr. Ali Khan was traveling onboard Train No. 12645 Ernakulam – Hazrat Nizamuddin Millennium Express and sitting on the inner lower berth No. S6/57.  When the train was approaching Ramagundam station (Telengana), the middle berth opened and hit Mr. Khan, who was on the lower berth (S6 57), causing  injuries.

Immediate action was taken to inform the on-Duty Station Master of Ramagundam station (around 18.34 hrs of 15.06.2024) and assistance was arranged via a 108 ambulance. The train was halted at an unscheduled stoppage at Ramagundam, and the passenger was shifted from the coach to the ambulance and admitted to a nearby hospital in Ramagundam. The passenger however expired after 3 days on 18.06.2024.

There have been news reports in media circles incorrectly alleging that the middle berth which opened up/unfolded was in damaged condition.  It is clarified that the middle berth unfolded due to improper chaining of the middle berth with the Upper berth by the respective passenger.  It may be noted that the middle berth did not fall down/crash due to improper maintenance by Railways: thus, reports suggesting a maintenance failure are misleading.  A thorough scrutiny of the reported middle berth seat was conducted at H.Nizamuddin and it was found to be in good condition.

Indian Railways expresses its heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family and is committed to provide best possible service to its esteemed passengers.
