The first contingent of 216 Delegates from Tamil Nadu leave for Kashi Tamil Sangamam- Phase II in a Special Train The maiden journey of the delegates flagged off by Hon’ble Governor of Tamil Nadu from Dr MGR Chennai Central today

Shri R.N.Ravi, Hon’ble Governor of Tamil Nadu flagged off the journey of first contingent of delegates for Kashi Tamil Sangamam-Phase II from Dr MGR Chennai Central today, 15th December 2023.

Shri Kaushal Kishore, Additional General Manager, Southern Railway, Shri B. Viswanath Eerya, DRM, Chennai and the eminent members of Kashi Tamil Sangamam Committee, namely, Prof. Kamakoti V. Director, IIT Madras, Shri.Nawabzada Mohammed Asif Ali, Dewan to Prince of Arcot, Dr. Nalli Kuppuswami Chetti, Chairman, Nalli Silks, other dignitaries and railway officials participated in the event.

In commemoration of Kashi Tamil Sangamam-Phase II, a book titled, ‘தமிழர்மரபில்காசி ‘(Kashi as etched o­n the Tamil mind), published by the Central Institute of Classical Tamil, was released by Shri R.N.Ravi, Hon’ble Governor of Tamil Nadu along with the dignitaries.  

The delegates were accorded a grand reception at Dr MGR Chennai Central and were facilitated through help desks for boarding the Kashi Tamil Sangamam special train that left for Varanasi at 10.45 hours today. 

The first contingent of 216 delegates boarded in 3 coaches earmarked for Kashi Tamil Sangamam delegates while other coaches were open for the general public.  

Southern Railway has notified 7 pairs of special trains to facilitate delegates from Tamil Nadu for participation in the second edition of Kashi Tamil Sangamam. The event is scheduled to be held in Varanasi from 17th December to 30th December 2023. The trains will be operated from Dr MGR Chennai Central (3 services), Kanniyakumari (2 services) and Coimbatore Jn. (2 services).

The second service of Kashi Tamil Sangamam Special train to Varanasi will commence from Kanniyakumari o­n 16th December 2023 (tomorrow).

Kashi Tamil Sangamam

Kashi Tamil Sangamam 2.0 is an initiative by the Government of India under the framework and spirit of “Ek Bharat, Shreshtha Bharat”.  The event is  a testament of  shared cultural bonding between Tamil Nadu and Kashi offering an opportunity for exchange of intellectual and spiritual thoughts.  IIT Madras and Banaras Hindu University (BHU) are the implementing agencies for the program. The delegates are chosen from different walks of life such as students, Teachers, farmers, professionals, artisans, entrepreneurs, scholars, among others.

The first edition of Kashi Tamil Sangamam was held in November-December 2022.  A total of 2592 delegates were facilitated by various trains from Southern Railway to Varanasi. Southern Railway provided 36 coaches in 12 Mail/Express services for the delegates bound for Varanasi from Tamil Nadu.
