In light of the Bharat Gaurav Train passenger falling sick due to suspected food poisoning enroute at Pune Jn, the following points are offered as clarification:
Train No.06911 Chennai Egmore – Palitana Bharat Gaurav Train departed from Chennai Egmore on 27th November 2023 and was operated by a registered service provider with Southern Railway. On arrival at Pune Jn. PF-2 at 23.37 hrs of 28th November 2023, around 70 passengers of B-11 coach had reportedly complained of stomach pain, vomiting, and dehydration.
Action taken by Railways
The Medical team of Pune division of Central Railway comprising Doctors, paramedical staff, NGO volunteers and Health Inspectors offered immediate medical attention upon which all the passengers are reportedly stable and proceeded with their journey. None of the passengers was hospitalized. Food Safety Officer & Health inspector of Pune station inspected the pantry car and collected food and water samples for scrutiny.
The group of passengers who travelled by the Bharat Gaurav Trainwere from a Jain Trust and had requested the Registered Service Provider to permit them to make their own catering in accordance with their customary dietary preferences. Neither Railways nor the Register Service provider made catering arrangements for the passengers. However, on enquiring with the passengers it was revealed that most of those passengers, majority of them being women, had experienced this discomfort due to continuous fasting for religious reasons.
Southern Railway has sought a detailed report from the Registered service Provider in this regard. Inquiries will be conducted into the incident and Southern Railway will take appropriate action accordingly.
