Madurai Junction Redevelopment works progress at steady pace

Southern Railway has taken up Station Redevelopment as o­ne of the key areas for enhancing the passenger experience. Southern Railway had awarded the work of Redevelopment of Madurai Junction Railway Station on 22nd Sep, 2022 as EPC contract to M/s P &C  Projects Private Limited, Chennai at a cost of Rs. 347.47 Crores, setting a time frame of 36 months for completion of the project. M/s TUV India Private Limited, Mumbai  have been tasked with the work of Project Management services (PMS) at a cost of Rs.10.88 Crore.

The station redevelopment work at Madurai station is now progressing at a steady pace. The progress of the  work completed and o­ngoing work are detailed below: 

Works executed Recently


· For construction of East terminal building stage-I, 188 piles out of 262 piles have been completed. 19 out of 40 Pile cap work completed. 5 out of 43 columns completed.


·For construction of East terminal building stage-2, 162 piles out of 427 piles have been completed.

· For construction of Multi-level Two-wheeler Parking (MLTP)  o­n the east side, 114 piles out of 114 piles have been completed. 24 out of 44 Pile cap work completed.

·RPF canteen building - Ground Floor slab completed

·Substation - plinth beam and column work completed

Other works in progress

·In connection with East terminal building stage-I construction,  rerouting of cables, water lines, sewage lines and utility cable works are under progress. Traffic diversion works are in progress.

·In connection with the construction of Multi-level Two-wheeler ParkingUtilities, cables, waterlines, sewage lines rerouting work are under progress. Temporary structure is under preparation for Shifting of existing part of RMS.

·Cable trench work is under progress for construction of the Substation building.

·Column concrete works are under progress for construction of RPF canteen building

·Architectural & structural Design of the Station Buildings and other structures are in progress.

·RPF canteen building -. Brickwork and plastering in progress

·Substation - Staircase and roof slab shuttering work in progress.

·Parcel FOB - Existing cable rerouting work at platform 2&3 and Existing floor concrete chipping work in progress.


Madurai Junction Redevelopment works

Two terminals are proposed to be constructed, o­ne each at the Eastern and Western side.  Three Multi-level Parking structures will be built, two buildings o­n the eastern side and o­ne o­n the west with an air-concourse to facilitate segregation of arrival and departure has been planned.

A subway connecting Railway Plot and Periyar Bus Stand, a dedicated FOB for Parcel movement, and two Skywalks connecting the Parking facilities o­n the eastern side, are also plannedApproach roads are planned for better movement of passenger vehicles. Further, o­ne Skywalk for arriving passengers connecting the auto and bus bay is also planned.

All Redevelopment work is to be carried out complying with the standards laid down under Green Rating for Integrated Habitat Assessment (GRIHA).
