Southern Railway conducts intensive Ticket Checking drives

Ticket Checking Wing of SR Headquarters records highest ever single-day earnings

Rs.22.7 lakh collected in fines o­n 15th Oct 2023, an all-time high single day earnings by SR Hqrs Flying Squad, 3384 cases registered

The Southern Railway is committed to enhancing services for authorized rail users and consistently conducts thorough ticket checking initiatives to deter ticketless or irregular travel. These initiatives include Ambush Checks (to prevent the misuse of the alarm chain), Fortress Checks (to monitor passenger entry and exit through authorized gates), and Cross Country Checks (performed by the Zonal Headquarters squad). These efforts are aimed at improving the overall travel experience and ensuring compliance with ticketing regulations.

Highest ever Single day Ticket Checking Earnings

On 15th October 2023, the Headquarters Flying Squad of Southern Railway recorded the highest ever single day earnings of Rs. 22.7 lakhs.  The Southern Railway HQ flying squad of 31 Ticket Checking Staff registered 3508 cases of ticketless/irregular travel o­n 15th October 2023, collecting Rs. 22.7 lakhs in fines.   

Intensive ticket checking drives were conducted by the flying squad at Dr MGR Chennai Central, Perambur, Erode, Coimbatore Jn and Ernakulam Junction stations.  Contributing effectively to the record single-day earnings, Shri P. Dilip, Chief Ticket Inspector, Shri C.A. Sivakumar, Chief Ticket Inspector and Ms. G. Jothi, Dy. Chief Ticket Inspector handled 338, 269 and 209 cases respectively o­n 15th October 2023 registering a revenue of Rs. 2.19 lakhs, Rs.1.86 lakhs and Rs.1.36 lakhs respectively.

SR Ticket Checking performance in FY 2023-24 till date

During the current financial year from 1st April 2023 to 15th October 2023, in Southern Railway, an amount of Rs. 57.48 Crores has been collected as penalties from passengers for various offences during travel registering a  total of 10.39 lakh cases. The cases include travel without tickets, irregular tickets and unbooked luggage.

Chennai Division collected Rs.11.01 Crores revenue which is the highest ticket checking revenue among the divisions during the period from April 2023 to 15th October 2023.   Thiruvananthapuram Division realized Rs.4.41 Crores while Palakkad Division’s ticket checking earnings stood at Rs.4.22 Crores.  Salem, Madurai and Tiruchirappalli Divisions’ ticket checking revenue stood at Rs. 4.12 Crores, Rs.2.74 Crores and Rs.2.48 Crores respectively.

Southern Railway commends the dedicated efforts of its Ticket Checking wing. While they remain committed to ensuring that passengers travel with valid authority, it is equally important for the public to uphold their responsibility in order to collectively enhance service quality.

It may be noted that Traveling without a valid ticket/pass is punishable under section 137, 138 & 139 of Railways Act of 1989.
