Chennai Egmore Station Redevelopment Works progressing at a steady pace

Four out of Thirteen Sub-works have commenced, remaining works to begin shortly

Unwavering support from State/Civic authorities in according approvals and extending technical support


Southern Railway has taken up the work of Re-development of Chennai Egmore Station to offer a world-class ambience, futuristic infra and airport-like facilities for passengers. Tender was awarded for the redevelopment work in October, 2022 and the work is progressing at a steady pace.

Scope of Chennai Egmore Redevelopment

The complete project has been divided into 13 sub-projects and work o­n four sub-projects have commenced, balance works are to commence by the end of this month.

The Thirteen sub-projects are:

·Station Buildings

·Multi-level Car Parking

·Commercial space o­n Gandhi-Irwin side

·Commercial space o­n Poonamallee side

·New Parcel Office

·72m wide Departure concourse

·36m wide Arrival concourse cum through passage

·12m wide Arrival Foot Over Bridge

·Through roof over the Platforms         

·6m wide Foot Over Bridge for handling Parcels

·New electrical substation

·Construction of new railway quarters

·External engineering redevelopment works

         Works executed Recently

·Major utilities which were coming under the proposed boundary of the new station premises have been shifted to appropriate places without affecting the train operation. The most critical was the telecom system, which is to ensure uninterrupted working of train operations has been completed smoothly. Other works like shifting of Permanent Way depot, S&T Depot, Running room, etc.

·Almost, the complete area has been made free from all encumbrances for the construction

Works in Progress

·Works of Multi-level car parking & commercial space o­n Gandhi-Irvin side and Poonamallee side of stations and parcel office are in full swing. 338 piles casted

·Piling works of Parcel and Multi-level car parking & commercial space o­n Gandhi-Irvin side are nearly under completion. So far 338 piles have been casted.

·Multi-level car parking & commercial space o­n Poonamallee side are in full swing..

            Unstinted support from State authorities/civic bodies

·Better collaboration has been established with Chennai Metrorail Corporation for jointly deciding designs of buildings at Poonamallee side which are coming over the tunnels and stations of Egmore Metro stations. The people of Chennai are about to witness this engineering excellence as the city prepares to embrace a seamlessly integrated multi-modal transportation system.

·Support and collaborative works from Chennai Metro Water Supply and Sewerage Board, TANGEDCO, GCC, CMDA, MTC, Highway department, Green Committee, Heritage committee, TNPCB, etc. have been commendable to give vertical start to the station redevelopment work. All these departments have extended their unwavering support at all the stages for giving necessary approvals, technical support in a time bound manner to ensure that the city shall have the first world class station of Tamil Nadu in Chennai Egmore.

          Other works to commence soon

·The process of taking up the construction of foot over bridges for Parcels and Arrival passengers will commence within a month with designs nearing completion. These Foot Over Bridgeswill be equipped with lifts and escalators.

A world-class experience o­n the anvil at Chennai Egmore

The work of Redevelopment of Chennai Egmore Railway station was awarded as EPC contract to M/s DEC Infrastructure and Projects India Private Limited, Hyderabad at a cost of Rs.734.91 Crores. M/s Tata Consulting Engineers Limited, Mumbai have been tasked with the work of Project Management services (PMS) at a cost of Rs.14.56 Crore.

Two terminals are proposed to be constructed, o­ne at the Gandhi Irwin Road Side and o­ne at the Poonamallee High Road side. The Terminal Buildings o­n both side are proposed as a G+3 structure with world class amenities like waiting lounge, ticketing area, commercial area and Roof plaza etc. Segregation of departing and arrival passengers, Parcel FOB, adequate Lifts and escalators are planned in this building. The proposed Multi-Level Car Parking o­n both GI side and PH side are proposed as G+5 structure with Commercial area, Car & Bike parking and Budgetary Hotel. The proposed Parcel office o­n the PH side is proposed as G+2 structure with Parcel office and RMS.

With the redevelopment of Chennai Egmore, the passengers and rail users visiting the prominent railhead will offer airport-like facilities and redefine travel experience to international standards.
