General Manager inaugurates the Special Cleanliness drive by administering Swachhata Pledge to the employees of Southern Railway

Thematic Cleanliness drives will be organized from 16th September to 2nd October 2023

Southern Railway, a passenger-focused zone, is making substantial strides in redefining the passenger experience by enhancing the cleanliness parameters of its stations and trains. To emphasize its dedication to promoting cleanliness among its employees, rail users, and the general public, the railway will organize a fortnight-long special Cleanliness Campaign known as ‘Swachhata Pakhwada’ from 16th September, 2023 to  2nd October, 2023, marking the Railway’s commitment to reinforce cleanliness among employees, rail users and general public.

Shri R.N. Singh, General Manager, Southern Railway inaugurated the ‘Swachhata Pakhwada’ special cleanliness campaign in Southern Railway by administering ‘Swachhata Pledge’ to the Officers and Staff of SR Headquarters, today.  The General Manager also kick started a signature campaign,  participated in a tree plantation drive and Shramdaan marking the Cleanliness along with Shri Kaushal Kishore, Additional General Manager, Shri P. Suresh, Principal Chief Mechanical Engineer, other Principal Heads of Departments, other Officers, Staff including conservancy workers and Scouts & Guides. 

Each day of the Swachhta Pakhwada Campaign will entail a Cleanliness theme and activities will be undertaken at SR headquarters, divisions, workshops, railway stations, offices and other field units.(Annexure-A).

Southern Railway earnestly calls upon rail users and the general public to collaborate with the Railways in making the cleanliness drive a resounding success.

Swachhata Pakhwada : Date and Theme  of Cleanliness activities

 16/09/2023 –   In-house Swachhata drive

Southern Railway Headquarters will organize Swachhata drives in various departments.  To spread the message of Clean offices, posters and banners will be displayed in conspicuous locations.

18/09/2023 & 19/09/2023 - Swachh Stations (Clean Stations)

Special focus o­n intensive cleaning of all the railway stations, will be undertaken to make the station premises litter-free.   A campaign for 'fill the dustbin', 'donate the dustbin' will be taken up to spread awareness among the rail users.

.20/09/2023 –  o­nline Quiz competition

The Mechanical Department of Southern Railway will conduct an o­nline-quiz competition for the employees o­n Cleanliness.

21/09/2023: Swachh Railgaadi (Clean Train):

Intensive inspection/cleaning of popular trains will be undertaken by teams of officers and staff to ensure cleanliness o­nboard.  All trains will be inspected in the washing lines, in railway yards and at stations. Train inspections will include checks o­n toilets and quality of linen. Suggestions/feedback will also be obtained from passengers and immediate action will be initiated.

22/09/2023 – Swachh Patri (Clean Tracks)

Intensive cleaning of tracks will be undertaken with the support of conservancy staff and volunteers.  Awareness rallies will be organized to sensitise passengers and general public.

25/09/2023: Swachh Ahar:

On this day intensive cleaning of station vending units, canteens, VRR/NVRR  and pantry cars will be taken up.All the Catering Units will be directed to clean their premises and ensure that clean and hygienic food is served. Samples of food will be taken for checking and feedback of passengers obtained o­n the quality of food served

 26/09/2023: Swachh Neer (Clean Water):

It will ensure that quality potable water is available and there is no shortage of water supply at any of the passenger service locations like waiting rooms, retiring rooms, platforms, trains, etc. Inspection of water vending machines, water coolers should be undertaken for cleaning and sample checks will be conducted o­n quality of water. Efforts for setting up rain harvesting plants and recycling plants will be strengthened. It will ensure that there is no problem of water stagnation anywhere in Railway premises.

27/09/2023 – Swachh Waterbodies & Parks

Intensive inspection of all water installations including filter plants, sources of water supply, water taps for drinking water at railway stations as well as trains will be undertaken.  Further, inspection of water installations in offices, Railway colonies / Hospitals / Health Units / Schools will be taken up o­n this day.  Parks in railway colonies will also be inspected and availability of sufficient facilities and play equipment will be ensured.

28/09/2023: Swachh Prasadhan (Clean Toilets) & Swachh Paryavaran (Swachh Environment)

The day will be dedicated to intensive cleaning of all toilet blocks at railway stations, coaching depots, trains and surrounding areas. Water availability, leaking pipes, drainage systems will be paid attention to and broken items replaced wherever required. People will be encouraged to desist from open defecation in areas approaching railway stations or o­n tracks.  In order to sensitize the traveling public o­n the need to maintain clean and hygienic surroundings, awareness rallies, skits and other events will be held.

29/09/2023 : Mass Tree Plantative drive across SR:

Reinforcing the Railway’s commitment to maintain an eco-friendly planet, mass tree plantation drives will be organized in Southern Railway o­n this day.

30/09/2023: No to Single Use plastics:

A webinar will be conducted o­n the measures to curb the use of single use plastics and replace the same with alternative eco-friendly products. 

02/10/2023 : Valedictory event:

The fortnight-long Cleanliness drive will culminate o­n Gandhi Jayanthi, the 2nd of October 2023 with a host of events and valedictory programme.
