Kanniyakumari Station Redevelopment works – An update


Southern Railway has taken up Kanniyakumari (CAPE) Station redevelopment in order to offer a world-class ambience, futuristic infra and airport-like facilities for passengers. Tender was awarded for the redevelopment work in November 2022 and the work is progressing at a brisk pace.


Works executed Recently


·Architectural & 3D illustrative drawings of Ancillary & Terminal buildings Approved.

·3D illustrative drawings of FOB Approved.

·GFC Drawings for RPF & Sub-station building Approved.

·Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) establishment & Site Marking for Ancillary buildings completed.

·Physical Work commenced for RPF & Sub-station building.


Other work in progress


·GRIHA Registration for Kanniyakumari station redevelopment work is underway

·QC laboratory work in progress.

·Shifting of temporary toilet work is in progress.

·Shifting of Goods approach road is in progress.

·Setting up of a Batching plant in progress.

·Architectural & structural Design of the Station Buildings, Ancillary buildings, FOB & Concourse is in progress

·Master Plan Re validation is in Progress.

·Utility Tracer in station premises is in progress.


Works executed So far

·Preliminary works such as Mapping and Topographical survey,drone survey, tree inventory is completed.

·All kinds of Soil tests (Geotechnical investigation) completed at various locations.

·   Project management Project Management Site Office construction is completed Services have commenced work.

·Site clearance work completed for all building locations.

Right of way, which is a legal right to enter and carry out the work, has been provided to the EPC contractor for construction of Terminal building North & south wing (Extension),  RPF building, Service room for mechanical staff, Rest room for running staff, Substation building , Demolition of Existing concourse roof & Erection of new concourse, shifting of Goods approach road, FOB connecting side platform (PF 1) & Island platform (PF 2,3), Platform

upgradation works, & Development of 4 lane road connecting MDR 27 & NH 44 (East to West)

·On regular basis project review meetings are held with the stakeholders of the project.

·Earth work excavation & PCC Completed for Substation building.

Kanniyakumari Station Redevelopment works


The work of Redevelopment of Kanniyakumari (CAPE) Railway station was awarded as EPC contract to M/s Engineering Projects (India) Ltd, Chennai at a cost of Rs.49.36 Crore. M/s TUV India Pvt Ltd, Mumbai have been tasked with the work of Project Management services (PMS) at a cost of Rs. 2.72 Crore.


The proposed project involves the construction of two state-of-the-art terminal buildings, o­ne o­n the southern side and o­ne o­n the northern side, connected by ground concourses. These G+1 structures will offer a range of world-class amenities, including air-conditioned waiting lounges, ticketing areas, commercial spaces, food courts, and more.


The concourses are designed to segregate arriving and departing passengers, with foot over bridges, lifts, and escalators for seamless passenger movement besides featuring retail spaces.  A covered driveway and forecourt o­n the eastern side enhance passenger drop-off and pick-up experiences, while the entry and exit roads prioritize efficient traffic flow. The FOB will provide platform access and emergency evacuation options, equipped with lighting, CCTV, public address systems, and signage.


Railway operation support facilities, such as the RPF building, service building for mechanical staff, restroom for running staff and loco pilots, and a substation building, are also included.

Overall, the Kanniyakumari station redevelopment project aims to enhance passenger experience and streamline railway operations with improved infrastructure and modern amenities.
