Southern Railway celebrated the 77th Independence Day today (15.08.2023) at the Railway Stadium, Perambur, Chennai. Shri R.N. Singh, General Manager, Southern Railway hoisted the National Flag in the presence of Shri G.M.Eswara Rao, Principal Chief Security Commissioner, RPF, and took the salute at the RPF parade consisting of RPF contingents including Women Platoons and St John's Ambulance Brigade.
The program was attended by Shri Kaushal Kishore, Additional General Manager, Principal Heads of Departments of Southern Railway, Shri B. Viswanath Eerya , Divisional Railway Manager/Chennai, Smt Sonia Singh, President of Southern Railway Women's Headquarters Organisation, Officers & Staff and their family members, and Representatives of Labour Unions and Associations of Southern Railway.
Addressing the gathering, the General Manager expressed pride in Indian Railways and its dedicated workforce playing a pivotal role in Nation building.The General Manager noted that Indian Railways is marching aheadproviding modern world class stations and enhancing the convenience of passengers by introducing ultra-modern Vande Bharat trains and state-of-the-art rolling stock.
Commending the performance of Southern Railway in his keynote address, the General Manager briefly outlined the various performance highlights of the zone, especially about the various infrastructure, electrification, engineering and safety works.
Excerpts from General Manager’s speech:
l During 2022-23, Southern Railway’s Gross earnings stood at about Rs.11,000 Crores, 51% higher than 2021-22. During the first 4 months of the current year also, SR sustained the growth momentumregistering total earnings of Rs.3883 Crores, which is 11% higher over the same period of last year.
l Freight loading was 24% higher while passenger footfall grew by 89% last year
l 92.5% Punctuality was achieved in 2022-23 compared to 88% in 2021-22
l For the benefit of passengers, 3 Vande Bharat Train services have been introduced over Southern Railway and having enhanced speed and modern facilities, these premium trains are highly patronized.
l Southern Railway enhanced the speeds over a record 2037 Route kms in 2022-23 from 110 to 130 Kmph, and from 80/90 to 110 kmph.
l Southern Railway has also done well in the network augmentation too. During 2022-23, we added 178 Kms to the network comprising 52 Kms Gauge conversion and 126 kms Doubling.
l In Southern Railway, 90 stations have been identified for upgradation under “Amrit Bharat Stations Scheme” and 21 stations have been taken up for major Station Redevelopment, which would enhance the travel experience of our passengers to world class standards.
l Prioritizing safety, 40 bridges have been rehabilitated and 75 ROBs/RUBs have been constructed in 2022-23
l On the green energy front, last year 58 lac units solar power was generated, amounting to a savings of Rs.2.7 crores. Also, 250 lac units of wind energy were generated, amounting to savings of Rs.13.7 crores.
l RPF team rescued 2205 runaway children and saved 62 precious lives during 2022-23
l During 2022-23, 1647 candidates were given appointment on Southern Railway and during 2023-24 till July 2023,6960 candidates have already been given appointment.
Cultural programmes by RPF, Impressive Dog Show by Southern Railway Dog Squad and performances by various departments including the Railway schools and Ashraya school for special children, followed the Flag Hoisting and March Past.
Shri G.K. Gupta, Chief Administrative Officer, Railway Construction Organisation, Egmore, Shri B. Viswanath Eerya, Divisional Railway Manager, Chennai, Shri Samir Dighe, Chief Project Manager/Railway Electrification and Shri Prasanta Kumar Sahu, Hon’ble Member/Technical, Railway Claims Tribunal hoisted the National flag at the respective Railway offices in Chennai.
