Southern Railway observes ‘Partition Horrors Remembrance Day’ Exhibitions depicting the horrors of partition put on display at 38 stations across SR


Partition Horrors Remembrance Day is an annual national memorial day, observed o­n August 14 each year in order to commemorate the victims and sufferings of people during the 1947 partition of India. An initiative by the Government of India, the day was first observed in 2021 to honour the victims and acknowledge their sufferings during the partition. This effort aims to throw light o­n a significant yet often overlooked segment of history.

Southern Railway observed Partition Horrors Remembrance Day today, 14th August 2023.  Exhibitions with photographs and exhibits depicting the partition were put o­n display at 38 railway stations across the Railway.  The exhibition featured an array of images illustrating the harrowing days of partition.

Renowned freedom fighters and families of martyrs were invited as special guests and felicitated during the inauguration of the exhibition at various railway stations.  The freedom fighters recounted the days of partition which was etched in history as the largest human replacement of the 20th century.  History enthusiasts, rail passengers and the general public visited the exhibitions in large numbers.

Photo Exhibition at Dr MGR Chennai Central

The Photo Exhibition gallery at Dr. MGR Chennai Central railway station was inaugurated by Chief guest, Shri Unni Nair (Squadron Leader), Retd. from Indian Air Force, in the presence of Shri B. Vishwanath Eerya, Divisional Railway Manager, Chennai Division and Shri Tej Partap Singh, ADRM/MAS and other senior officials of Chennai Division participated in the inauguration.  

Similar exhibitions were organised at Chennai Egmore, Chennai Beach, Tambaram, Chengalpattu, Arakkonam, Katpadi, Jolarpettai, Tiruvallur, Gudiyattam, Tiruvallikeni and Velachery Railway Stations

Photo Exhibition at Salem Jn

ThExhibition of Photographs, organised at Salem Jn railway station, was inaugurated by Tmt. Dr. M. Pandikkani, Assistant Professor, Department of History, Government Arts College for Women, Salem – 8 in the presence of Thiru Pankaj Kumar Sinha, Divisional Railway Manager, Thiru P. Sivalingam, Additional Divisional Railway Manager, Thiru P.K. Soundra Pandian, Sr. Divisional Personnel Officer and other officials and staff of Salem Division today – 14.08.2023.

Similar Exhibition of Photographs pertaining to Partition Horrors Remembrance Day has been organised at Erode, Tiruppur & Coimbatore Jn railway stations in Salem Division.

Photo Exhibition at Madurai Jn

ThExhibition of Photographs, organised at Madurai Jn railway station, was inaugurated byShri R. Paramasivam, renowned freedom fighter in the presence of Shri P. Ananth, Divisional Railway Manager, Shri T. Ramesh Babu, Additional Divisional Railway Manager, Shri M. Ayyappa Nagaraja, Chief Project Manager/Gathi Sakthi, Shri T. Sankaran, Divisional Personnel Officer and other officials and staff of Madurai Division today.

Similar exhibitions are being held at  Virudunagar, Tirunelveli, Dindigul, and Manamadurai railway stations in Madurai Division.

Photo Exhibition at Tiruchchirappalli Jn

The Exhibition of Photographs was inaugurated by Tmt. Chellammal, wife of Late Shri Ramaiah (Freedom fighter and Member of Nethaji’s INA), in the presence of Thiru M.S. Anbalagan, Divisional Railway Manager,Thiru S.T. Ramalingam, Additional Divisional Railway Manager, Dr.I. Senthil Kumar, Sr. Divisional Commercial Manager, Thiru V.Swaminathan, Sr. Divisional Personnel Officer and other Sr. Branch officers and staff of Tiruchchirappalli Division today.

Similar Exhibitions were also organised at Villupuram, Puducherry, Thanjavur and Thiruvarur railway stations of Tiruchchirappalli Division.

Photo Exhibition at Thiruvananthapuram Central

The exhibition, held at Thiruvananthapuram Central railway station, was inaugurated by Sri Thalanad Chandrasekharan Nair, a Gandhi follower who actively participated in the freedom movement. Shri S.M. Sharma, Divisional Railway Manager, honored the chief guest in the presence of Shri M. Vijayakumar, Additional Divisional Railway Manager, Shri Paul Edwin Enoch, CPM Gatisakthi, Shri Lipin Raj Sr. Divisional Personnel Officer, and other officials, staff and passengers.

Similar exhibitions were held at Nagercoil Junction, Kollam Junction, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Ernakulam Junction, and Thrissur railway stations of Thiruvananthapuram Division, Southern Railway.

Photo Exhibition at Palakkad Jn

The Photo exhibition at Palakkad Junction was inaugurated byShri. Sidharth K Varma, Senior Divisional Personnel Officerin the presence of Shri Febin Philip, Senior Divisional Financial ManagerShri Jithin Nelson, Senior Divisional Mechanical Engineer and other Railway officials, rail passengers and general public.  

Similar Exhibitions were also held at Kozhikode, Shoranur,Kannur, Mangaluru Central railway stations in Palakkad Division.
