Hon’ble PM lays the foundation stone for 508 Amrit Bharat Stations

25 stations in Southern Railway all set to undergo remarkable transformation under Amrit Bharat Scheme at a total cost of Rs.616 Crores

‘Amrit Bharat Stations’ aiming at redevelopment of railway stations with a long-term vision, o­n a continuous basis

Shri Narendra Modi, Hon’ble Prime Minister of India laid the foundation stone virtually for the major upgradation of 508 stations pan-India under Amrit Bharat Station Scheme (ABSS) today,  6th August 2023.  This includes 25 stations in Southern Railway.  Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw, Hon’ble Union Minister of Railways, Electronics, Communications & Information Technology, Ministers of state and other dignitaries attended the Central function. Shri N. Rangaswamy, Hon’ble Chief Minister of Puducherry graced the ceremonial function held at Puducherry station.

Hon’ble Prime Minister, in his keynote address detailed the achievements of Indian Railways and how the national transporter is driving the country’s growth.  Elaborating o­n ‘Amrit Bharat Stations’, Hon’ble PM  remarked that the redeveloped stations will be a shining example of Modern India.

Ceremonial functions in Southern Railway

In Southern Railway, ceremonial functions were organized at all the 25 stations in the august presence of elected representatives, eminent persons from various fields, renowned sportsperson, freedom fighters and senior Government and Railway officials.   School/College students participated in large numbers.  Prizes were distributed to the winners of various competitions held as part of ‘Amrit Bharat Stations’. 

Cultural events were organized at all the 25 stations.  To celebrate the momentous launch of ‘Amrit Bharat Station Scheme’, Selfie points were installed at all the stations.

Amrit Bharat Stations in Southern Railway

These 25 stations in Southern Railway, for which foundation stone was laid by Hon’ble Prime Minister, will be taken up for comprehensive development at a  total sanctioned cost of over Rs. 616 Crores. This includes 18 stations in Tamil Nadu, 5 in Kerala, o­ne in  Karnataka and o­ne in Puducherry (UT) in the first phase (List of stations in  Annexure-A). The Puducherry Station is being redeveloped to the international standards at a cost of Rs. 93 Crores under comprehensive Station Redevelopment scheme. 

In Southern Railway, a total of 93 stations, including these 24 stations, have been identified for development under Amrit Bharat Station Scheme.  This includes 62 stations in Tamil Nadu, 27 stations in Kerala, 2 stations in Puducherry(UT) and o­ne station each in Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh jurisdiction of Southern Railway.

The following improvements are planned at the identified stations as part of Phase-I development under Amrit Bharat Scheme at the 25 railway stations in Southern Railway:

·Foot Over Bridges

·Escalators & Lifts

·Improvements to circulating area, façade & waiting areas

·Two/four wheeler  parking

·Landscaping / Horticulture

·Integrated Passenger Information System

·Signages

·Improvements to Platforms & Platform shelters

·Better illumination & Power supply arrangements

·Installation of CCTV Cameras

·Enhanced Wi-Fi

Key features of Amrit Bharat Scheme

The Ministry of Railways conceptualized a novel scheme of ‘Amrit Bharat Stations’ aiming at redevelopment of railway stations with a long-term vision, o­n a continuous basis.  Amrit Bharat stations will be equipped with state-of-the-art facilities, clean and spacious waiting areas, and modern passenger-friendly amenities and seamless multi-modal connectivity

Amrit Bharat Station scheme aims to cater for introduction of new amenities for passengers as well as upgradation and replacement of existing amenities. The scheme aims at preparation of Master Plans of the Railway stations and implementation of the Master Plan in phases to enhance the facilities at the station in the long run.
