Provision of Economy Meals and affordable Packaged Drinking water at platform near GS coaches through extended service counters
In Southern Railway, Extended service counters have been provided at Seven stations
Seven railway stations in Southern Railway are now equipped with ‘Extended service counters’ placed near General Second Class(GS)/Unreserved coaches in Platforms to facilitate service of economy meals, snacks/combo meals and affordable packaged drinking water to the passengers of GS coaches.
The meals will be supplied from the kitchen units such as Refreshment Rooms (RRs) & Jan Ahaars( JAs) of IRCTC located at these Seven stations, viz., Mayiladuthurai Virudhunagar, Nagercoil, Thiruvananthapuram, Mangaluru Jn, Salem and Erode.
Salient features
Extended Service Counters have been made functional in order to improve quality, services as well as to ensure availability of adequate facility of affordable and economy meals to the passengers traveling in GS coaches (unreserved) which are positions at either ends of the train.
These service counters will be manned by the authorized platform vendors, permitted under extant policy of platform vending, for stacking, service, sale of economy meals and sealed water glasses.
·Location of these service counters will be aligned with the location of GS coaches.
·The scheme would be implemented by IRCTC on an experimental basis for a period of six months.
·The following items will be made available at the Extended service counters of Refreshment Rooms/ Jan Aahars:

·With regard to drinking water, glasses of 200 ml packaged drinking water will be sold. Efforts are being made to source 200 ml packaged drinking water at stations wherever feasible and till such time 1 Ltr bottles of Packaged drinking water is available.
·Extended service counters will be progressively implemented at many other stations facilitating the availability of economy meals and drinking water.
Benefits:
·For the passengers traveling in unreserved coaches, this system will ensure availability of quality and affordable meals very near to the coach they are traveling in.
·Easy accessible as the counters will be located near GS coaches.
In addition,Platform vending facility with dedicated service counters is also put in place at platforms of enroute stations (with IRCTC managed kitchens- Refreshment rooms, Jan Aahars) to enable passengers of GS coaches to buy affordable/hygienic food at the platforms.
