Southern Railway has taken up Station Redevelopment as one of the key areas for enhancing the passenger experience. Southern Railway had awarded the work of Redevelopment of Madurai Junction Railway Station on 22nd Sep, 2022 as EPC contract to M/s P &C Projects Private Limited, Chennai at a cost of Rs. 347.47 Crores, setting a time frame of 36 months for completion of the project. M/s TUV India Private Limited, Mumbai have been tasked with the work of Project Management services (PMS) at a cost of Rs.10.88 Crore.
The station redevelopment work at Madurai station is now progressing at a steady pace. The progress of the work completed and ongoing work are detailed below:
Works executed Recently
·Foundation work has been completed for construction of RPF canteen building
·Foundation and Backfilling work completed for construction of the Substation building. Footing and Column concrete work up to plinth level was also completed.
· Pile load test on test pile has been completed in connection with construction of East terminal building stage-I,.
·Ready mix concrete (RMC) plant has been erected and commissioned
·Demolition of existing Multi-level Two-wheeler Parking (MLTP), old IRCTC Food Plaza, Guard box room, coolie porter room and HMS office for the proposed construction of MLTP in the east side has been completed.
Other works in progress
·In connection with East terminal building stage-I construction, rerouting of cables, water lines, sewage lines and utility cable works are under progress. Traffic diversion works are in progress.
·In connection with the construction of Multi-level Two-wheeler Parking, Utilities, cables, waterlines, sewage lines rerouting work are under progress. Temporary structure is under preparation for Shifting of existing part of RMS.
·Cable trench work is under progress for construction of the Substation building.
· Column concrete works are under progress for construction of RPF canteen building
·Architectural & structural Design of the Station Buildings and other structures are in progress.
Works executed so far
·Preliminary works like Site topography, soil investigation works and Master plan validation has been completed
·Construction of Site office for PMS has been completed and commissioned.
·Demolition of existing Toilet block and ATM block for proposed construction of East terminal building Segment-1 has been completed.
· Demolition of existing staff quarters and abandoned GLR in the old east colony for the construction of the proposed Subway has been completed and alternate accommodation has been arranged.
·QC laboratory works completed and commissioned.
·GRIHA registration completed and workshop has been conducted by GRIHA.
· Architectural and structural drawings of RPF canteen buildings, substation and MLTP completed.
·On regular basis project review meetings are held with the stakeholders of the project
Madurai Junction Redevelopment works
Two terminals are proposed to be constructed, one each at the Eastern and Western side. Three Multi-level Parking structures will be built, two buildings on the eastern side and one on the west with an air-concourse to facilitate segregation of arrival and departure has been planned.
A subway connecting Railway Plot and Periyar Bus Stand, a dedicated FOB for Parcel movement, and two Skywalks connecting the Parking facilities on the eastern side, are also planned. Approach roads are planned for better movement of passenger vehicles. Further, one Skywalk for arriving passengers connecting the auto and bus bay is also planned.
All Redevelopment work is to be carried out complying with the standards laid down under Green Rating for Integrated Habitat Assessment (GRIHA).
