Update o­n Ernakulam Town Station Redevelopment Works

Ernakulam Town Railway station (also known as Ernakulam North Station) is the o­ne of the busiest railway junction stations in South India.  Southern Railway has taken up the redevelopment of this station so as to offer modern infrastructure and airport-like facilities for the passengers.  Tender was awarded for the redevelopment work in August 2022 and now the preliminary work has begun and progressing at a steady pace.

Recent Works done

·The pile foundation works of the new Residential Tower is being done at Ernakulam Junction colony is nearing completion.

·The Multi-level Car Parking (MLCP) site at Ernakulam Town station is cleared and pile load test is completed. The piling works started o­n 08.05.23.

·The old station building dismantling required for Phase I works have been completed for 50 m duly shifting parcel office and other offices.

·The dismantling of platform shelter in PF1 for FOB works has been completed.

·RMC plants for the project have been commissioned.

Works executed so far and in progress

·The topographical survey, soil investigation, utility survey, drone survey and videography are completed.

·Right of way handed over for all works.

·Residential Tower – Foundation work of piles is nearing completion, with 69 out of 73 piles having been completed.

·Multi-Level Car Parking – Dismantling of staff quarters (18 units) for construction of MLCP completed and alternate accommodation arranged for residents.Load test o­n the test pile have been completed and piling works have commenced.

·West terminal building –The revamping works for shifting of offices for Phase-1 completed and Duty SM, RPF, Dy.SP/GRP, Parcel Office & HI office are shifted.  Work for shifting of OFC repeater room and substation is in the finishing stage. Load tests o­n the test pile have been completed and preliminary works for foundation works are in progress.

·FOB 12m wide –PF shelter dismantling in PF no.1 completed. Utility shifting and other preparatory works are in progress.

·PMS office, Laboratory and RMC plant commissioned.

Ernakulam Town Station Redevelopment


The work of “Re-development of Ernakulam Town Railway Station” was awarded as an EPC contract to M/s RANK Projects and Development Pvt Ltd, for an amount of Rs. 150.28 Cr o­n 29.08.2022. The completion period of the project is 36 months. The Project Management Services for the subject work was awarded to M/s Aarvee Associates Pvt.Ltd, Hyderabad for Rs.5.92 Cr. The station building is proposed to be developed as a “green building”, complying with the standards laid down under Green Rating for Integrated Habitat Assessment(GRIHA).

As part of Station redevelopment, the newly constructed West Terminal building will come up in place of the existing buildings which will be demolished in 3 phases. The three-storey West Terminal will accommodate waiting lounges for passengers with facilities like restaurants, retail outlets and toilets with dedicated arrival and departure corridors.  An air-concourse with Skywalk connectivity, a new Foot Over Bridge and Multi-level Car Parking are proposed to be constructed.
