Southern Railway attains phenomenal performance in all facets of working in FY 2022-2023

Best ever Safety record with ‘NIL’ consequential accidents and 35% increase in track renewal


Best ever Gross earnings of Rs. 10,703 Crore – 47% increase over last year

A huge increase in passenger count by 88% which is now 640 million

37.94 MT of freight loading and highest ever earnings of Rs.3637 Crore

Best ever Safety record with ‘NIL’ consequential accidents and 35% increase in track renewal

Southern Railway recorded an exemplary performance in all facets of working in financial year 2022-23 with significant indicators reaching ‘highest ever’ record.  The gross earnings of the zone shot up to Rs.10703 Cr, a whopping 47% increase over FY 2021-22.  Passenger, freight, Safety and Commercial segments witnessed noteworthy surge in growth. An insight into the key performance indicators of the zone in FY 2022-23 is given below:

‘Best ever’ tags in SR performance

ØSouthern Railway achieved its best gross earnings of Rs.10703 Cr which is 47% increase from previous year 2021-22 and 18% higher than the previous best earnings of Rs.9055 Cr recorded in 2018-19.

ØIn the financial year 2022-23, Southern Railway generated a highest ever revenue of Rs.6345 Crore in the passenger segment and has recorded growth of 80% over last financial year earning of Rs.3539.77 crores, surpassing the previous best of Rs.5225 Crore which had been  achieved in the financial year 2019-2020 and it has been surpassed by 21%.  A total of 640 million passengers travelled during 2022-2023 witnessing an increase of 88.5% compared to 339.6 million passengers during 2021-2022.

ØSouthern Railway has achieved an originating loading of 37.94 Million Tonnes in FY 2022-23 which is 2.20 Million Tonnes or 6 % more than the target set by Railway Board.  Significantly,  the zone has generated highest ever revenue of Rs.3637.86 crores o­n the freight segment surpassing last year (2021-22) earnings by 30% and the previous best revenue of Rs.3059 crores in 2018-19 by 19%.

ØIndicating high level of commitment to Safety, Southern Railway achieved ‘Zero Consequential accidents’ in FY 2022-23.

ØThe concerted efforts of the zone in raising sectional speed over a record length of 2037 Km resulted in speeding up of 44 trains in 2022-23

Other significant achievements

ØElectronic Interlocking : Southern Railway achieved 53% increase by commissioning 29 Electronic interlocking units

ØTicket Checking : SR earned Rs.115 Cr from ticket checking

ØInfrastructure Projects :  Southern Railway commissioned 178 Km of infrastructure projects, including 52 Kms of gauge conversion and 126 Kms of doubling, achieving a 100% increase.

ØSafety works : Southern Railway recorded its best ever safety works, including a 35% increase in rail renewal, a 14.6% increase in deep screening, a 24% increase in thick web switch, a 12% increase in USFD testing, a 2% increase in BMC work, and a 48% increase in rehabilitation of bridges.
