Update on Ernakulam Town Station Redevelopment Works
Ernakulam Town Railway station (also known as Ernakulam North Station) is the one of the busiest railway junction stations in South India. Southern Railway has taken up the redevelopment of this station so as to offer modern infrastructure and airport-like facilities for the passengers. Tender was awarded for the redevelopment work in August 2022 and now the preliminary work has begun and progressing at a steady pace.
Recent work done:
· Work of dismantling of quarters is completed for construction of Multi level Car Parking (MLCP). Residents of the quarters have been provided alternate accommodation
·The test pile for Multilevel car parking have been concreted and will be tested after the curing period
·Foundation work started for the batching plant which is planned at Ernakulam Marshalling yard
·The initial load testing of pile for Residential tower (meant for Railway employees) for 20 units is completed and piling works for the building will be started soon
·Parcel office, RPF office, TTE restrooms, GRP office, Station manager room, SM office, Crew lobby etc have been shifted
Works executed so Far
·Social Forestry department clearance obtained
·Topographic survey, Soil investigation, Utility survey with Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR), Drone survey of the project site completed
Other work in progress
·The alternate office arrangements for shifting of existing offices/amenities are nearing completion and shifting of offices are in progress
·Work on the OpticalFibre Cables (OFC) repeater room is in progress.
·Temporary shifting work of existing indoor transformer and Panels available in substation building nearing completion
·The site office for the Authority engineer is nearing completion.
Ernakulam Town Station Redevelopment
The work of “Re-development of Ernakulam Town Railway Station” was awarded as an EPC contract to M/s RANK Projects and Development Pvt Ltd, for an amount of Rs. 150.28 Cr on 29.08.2022. The completion period of the project is 36 months. The Project Management Services for the subject work was awarded to M/s Aarvee Associates Pvt.Ltd, Hyderabad for Rs.5.92 Cr. The station building is proposed to be developed as a “green building”, complying with the standards laid down under Green Rating for Integrated Habitat Assessment(GRIHA).
As part of Station redevelopment, newly constructed West Terminal building will come up in place of the existing buildings which will be demolished in 3 phases.The three-storey West Terminal will accommodate waiting lounges for passengers with facilities like restaurants, retail outlets and toilets with dedicated arrival and departure corridors. An air-concourse with Skywalk connectivity, a new Foot Over Bridge and Multi-level Car Parking are proposed to be constructed.
