Valedictory function of Iconic Week Celebrations of Azadi Ki Rail Gadi Aur Stations held today

Grand functions organized by Southern Railway at Tiruvallikkeni, Tiruppur, Vellore Cantonment, Vanchi Maniyachchi and Nilambur Road hounouring the legacy of freedom fighters

The Valedictory Central function of the Iconic week celebration of the event "Azadi Ki Rail Gadi Aur Stations" was held today,  23rd July 2022 in New Delhi.  Shri Prahlad Joshi, Hon’ble Minister of Parliamentary Affairs, Coal and Minesdelivered keynote address and interacted with some freedom fighters and their families who graced the event at various locations. The Minister also flagged off the Bharat Gaurav Tourist Circuit train from Madurai to Varanasi.  Shri Danve Raosaheb Dadarao Hon'ble Union Minister of State for Railways, Coal and Mines attended the event through virtual means. Smt. Darshana Vikram Jardosh, Hon'ble Union Minister of State for Textiles and Railways, and Shri V.K.Tripathy, Chairman & CEO, Railway Board were present at the function. 

In Southern Railway, the central valedictory function was live streamed at all the five stations, namely, Vellore Cantonment, Vanchi Maniyachi, Tiruppur, Nilambur Road, and Tiruvallikeni which are among the 75 railway stations pan-India identified for the program.


In Chennai Division, at Tiruvallikeni MRTS Station, Shri Karuppaiah, a 99-year old freedom fighter was the special guest at Tiruvallikkeni.  He was a volunteer in the Nethaji’s Azad Hind Fauj (INA) movement.  In 1943-44, Shri Karuppaiah had actively participated as a volunteer in fund raising programme of Nethaji in Myanmar ( Burma). Shri Prahlad Joshi, Hon’ble Minister of Parliamentary Affairs, Coal and Mines interacted with Shri Karuppaiah and paid respects.


Shri Niranjan Bharathi, a fifth-generation descendant of Mahakavi Subramanya Bharathiyar, graced the occasion.  Addressing mediapersons, he thanked the Central Government for organizing the iconic week celebrations at Tiruvallikkeni, the place where Mahakavi Bharathi spent the eventful last few years of his life.  He expressed pride in participating in the function o­n behalf of Bharatiyar’s family.  A tamil film lyricist and an accomplished poet, Shri Niranjan Bharathi follows the footsteps of his great grandfather in writing and publishing tamil literary works. He is advocating the spread of Tamil language across the world through his “MYTAMILGURU” e-school.


Shri Ganesh, DRM, Chennai felicitated Shri Karuppaiah and Shri Niranjan Bharathi during the function.  Speaking at the event, DRM praised Bharatiyar’s  voluminous contribution to the freedom movement through his literary works and fiery poems.


Similar events were held at all the other four stations, viz., Tiruppur, Vanchi Maniyachchi, Vellore Cantonment and Nilambur Road.  Freedom fighters and/or their families who graced the occasion as special guests were  felicitated.


As part of the iconic week celebrations, cultural programmes and photo exhibitions recalling the legacy of freedom fighters were held at the five stations in Southern Railway during 18th July-23rd July 2022.  Façade lighting arrangements and Selfie points at the station were also the key attractions during the week. Railway Officers and Staff, rail users and general public attended the events in large numbers.
