Jolarpet Running Room of Chennai Division of Southern Railway bags the best Running Room Efficiency Shield
One Gazetted Officer and five non-gazetted staff of Southern Railway receive individual awards for outstanding performance
This year, the 67th Railway Week Award Ceremony was hosted by East Coast Railway and a grand function was held in Bhubaneswar on 28th May 2022. Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw, Hon’ble Minister for Railways, Communications & Electronics and Information Technology graced the occasion as Chief Guest and presented the efficiency shields and awards. Shri V.K.Tripathi, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Railway Board, Members and senior officials of Railway Board participated in the function besides Shield/award winners from all over Indian Railways.
Railway Week is celebrated all over Indian Railways every year in commemoration of the genesis of Railways on Indian soil and operation of the first passenger train service from Bori Bunder to Thane on 16th April 1853. As part of Railway Week Celebrations, the best performing Zonal Railways, workshops and field units, in various categories, are felicitated with Efficiency Shields while the meritorious employees are honored with individual awards for excelling in work.
Southern Railway’s accolades
Among the Zonal Railways, Southern Railway bagged the Efficiency Shield for the best Running Room at Jolarpet railway station. Shri B.G. Mallya, General Manager, Southern Railway and Shri Ganesh, Divisional Railway Manager, Chennai Division of Southern Railway received the award presented by Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw, Hon’ble Minister for Railways, Communications, Electronics and Information Technology in the presence of Shri Shri V.K.Tripathi, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Railway Board.

Jolarpet Crew Running Room : A jewel in the crown of Southern Railway
Running rooms are the places where the Running crew like Loco Pilots, Assistant Loco Pilots and Guards take rest (at stations other than their home station) after completion of duty (called as sign-off) and before picking up the next duty (called sign-on) The crew running room at Jolarpet that bagged the best Running Room Efficiency Shield among other similar units across Indian Railways, functions under Chennai Division of Southern Railway. The Unit is ISO 22000 & ISO 9001 certified Running room for maintenance facilities and known for its accommodation facilities & hygienic food. Equipped with 137 air-conditioned cubicles, the running room has adopted best energy efficient practices such as LED lights, BLDC fans and solar panels. The facility provides comfortable stay for the running staff with an array of modern facilities.
67th Railway Week Awards at National Level
156 Railway Employees from various Zonal Railways all over the country were awarded for their outstanding services. 21 Shields for Efficiency amongst Zonal Railways, Production Units & PSUs.
West Central Railway, Jabalpur bagged Govind Ballabh Pant Shield for Overall Efficiency. East Coast Railway bagged efficiency shield for Electrical Engineering and Accounts & Finance Management.
As for the individual awards for exemplary work, 10 Trackmen that include 8 in Safety Category and two in Operations, Security & Safety Category have been awarded. 28 Railway Employees awarded for meritorious act even in disregard to personal safety leading to protection of life and property on Railways. 42 Railwaymen awarded for exemplary work done to improve operations, Security & Safety, Better maintenance and utilisation of assets, 28 Employees awarded for New Innovations, procedures leading to economies in expenditure, improvement of productivity, etc.; 11 employees awarded for increase in earnings and to ticketless travel, theft, etc., 12 for completion of projects in record time; 01 for outstanding performance in the field of Sports; 33 Railwaymen awarded for outstanding performance in other fields.
