The ticket checking wing of Southern Railway has intensified its efforts to curb ticketless and irregular travel of passengers. During the current financial year from April 2021-February 2022 (upto 27th February 2022), Southern Railway registered revenue of Rs.83.99 Crore as ticket checking earnings which is 22.9% higher compared to the same period of 2019-20 (pre-COVID). A total of 16,32,944 penalty cases were registered in the Zone during the said period from defaulters apprehended for ticketless travel, Irregular tickets and Unbooked luggage.
Among the Divisions, Chennai Division generated Rs. 29.86 Crores from 6.33 lakh cases during the period from April 2021 to February 2022. Thiruvananthapuram Division registered a revenue of Rs.16.53 Crores and 3.10 lakh cases were registered during the period. Palakkad Division (Rs.14.15 Crores & 2.70 lakh cases), Salem Division (Rs.9.61 Crores & 1.69 lakh cases), Madurai Division (Rs.7.79 Crores & 1.37 lakh cases) and Tiruchchirappalli Division (Rs.6.02 Crores & 1.12 lakh cases) also generated considerable earnings from ticket checking during the above period.
In the month of February 2022, Southern Railway witnessed an increase of ticket checking revenue of Rs.9.15 Crores, an increase of 32.8% compared to February 2020 (pre-COVID). A commendable performance by the ticket checking wing of the Divisions, on 27.02.2022, highest number of cases were registered against defaulters (8245 cases – highest in a single day) yielding a revenue of Rs.43.35 lakh.
Southern Railway appeals to all the rail passengers to travel with valid tickets and ensure booking of luggage in excess of marginal allowance.
