Hon’ble Prime Minister inaugurates and dedicates various Rail, Road, Ports, Airport and Power projects for the state of Tamil Nadu at Tuticorin today Hon’ble PM dedicates Railway Infrastructure and Electrification projects costing Rs.1300 Crores


Shri Narendra Modi, Hon’ble Prime Minister of India, who is o­n a two-day visit to Tamil Nadu, inaugurated and dedicated projects implemented by various ministries such as Railways, Roadways, Ports, Airport and Power at a function held in Tuticorin today, 26th July 2025.  This includes key railway electrification and doubling projects costing Rs.1030 Crores.  Shri RN Ravi, Hon'ble Governor of Tamil Nadu,Shri Kinjarapu Rammohan Naidu, Hon’ble Union Minister of Civil Aviation, Dr L Murugan, Hon Minister of state for Information & Broadcasting and Parliamentary AffairsShri Thangam Thennarasu, Hon'ble Minister of Finance, Tamil Nadu, Dr T.R.B. Rajaa, Minister for Industries, Investment Promotions and Commerce, Tamil Nadu,         Smt. P. Geetha Jeevan, Hon'ble Minister of Social Welfare and Women Empowerment, Tamil NaduShri Anitha R. Radhakrishnan, Minister for Fisheries, Fishermen Welfare, and Animal HusbandryShri Kanimozhi Karunanidhi, Hon’ble Members of Parliament and Shri Nainar Nagenthran, Hon’ble MLA participated in the event.

A massive push for Rail Infra in Tamil Nadu

Hon’ble Prime Minister dedicated three important railway projects costing Rs.1030 Crores benefiting the state of Tamil Nadu.  These projects will strengthen rail connectivity in the Southern districts of Tamil Nadu covering Tirunelveli, Kanniyakumari, Madurai and Theni districts and boost the economic progress of the region.  Moreover, the projects will enhance the efficiency of train operations easing both passenger and freight traffic.  The projects dedicated by Hon’ble Prime Minister are detailed below:

1. Dedication to the Nation of Madurai - Bodinayakkanur Rail Line Electrification (90 KM)

This eco-friendly and sustainable railway project completed at a cost of Rs.99 Crore, significantly enhances rail connectivity for the people of Madurai and Theni districts, paving the way for faster and more efficient travel. The project is expected to increase tourist footfall to scenic destinations such as Theni and Bodi. Moreover, it brings tangible benefits to farmers, small vendors, students, and daily commuters by providing them with better and more reliable travel options.

2. Dedication to the Nation -Doubling of Nagercoil Town - Nagercoil Jn - Kanniyakumari Railway Line (21 KM)

Completed at a cost of Rs.650 Crore, this project is a part of the Thiruvananthapuram–Kanniyakumari Railway Line Doubling Project and aimed at strengthening rail connectivity between Tamil Nadu and Kerala. By enhancing regional economic integration, it facilitates smoother movement for daily commuters, tourists, and businesses. The project supports agricultural and manufacturing sectors by improving the transport of goods to coastal regions, thereby boosting trade and local economies. It also enhances the reliability and frequency of train services, offering significant benefits to students, vendors, traders, and regular passengers. Additionally, it provides greater convenience for tourists visiting iconic landmarks and scenic locations in Kanyakumari and Thiruvananthapuram.

3. Dedication to the Nation of Doubling of Aralvaymozhi - Nagercoil Jn (12.87 Km) &    Tirunelveli - Melappalayam (3.6 Km) Railway Lines

This project completed at a cost of Rs.283 Crore, is part of the Vanchi Maniyachchi–Nagercoil Railway Line Doubling project. It fulfills the demand for both passenger and freight traffic in South Tamil Nadu. It will significantly reduce travel time between major routes such as Chennai–Nagercoil and Chennai–Kanniyakumari, enhancing overall connectivity across the region. It supports regional economic growth by improving logistics and transportation efficiency for local industries, thereby contributing to the overall development of the area.

Shri R.N. Singh, General Manager, Southern Railway, Shri Sharad Srivastava, Divisional Railway Manager of Madurai Division, and Senior officials from Railways and all other participating ministries attended the event.
