Southern Railway Launches Integrated Telemedicine Facility Across Its Railway Hospitals and Health Units The facility aims to provide Specialist Care to Railway beneficiaries at far-flung areas of Southern Railway

Shri R. N. Singh, General Manager, Southern Railway inaugurated a state-of-the-art Telemedicine Facility connecting the Divisional Railway Hospitals and Health Units with the Headquarters Hospital at Perambur, Chennai.   The Telemedicine system was launched at a function held at Southern Railway Headquarters Hospital, Perambur, in the presence of Dr. C.M. Ravi, Principal Chief Medical Director, Southern Railway, Dr. Kalyani Sai Dhandapani, Principal Chief Medical Director, Railway Hospital, Dr. V.Kannan, Medical Director, Railway Hospital, Perambur and other dignitaries including Principal Heads of Departments of Southern Railway and Senior officials of Chennai Division.

Developed under the Government of India’s e-Sanjeevani scheme, the Telemedicine facility enables Medical Officers at remote locations to consult Specialists and Super Specialists at Railway Hospital/Perambur, facilitating clinical decision-making and reducing the need for patients to travel long distances.  The facility proved invaluable during the COVID-19 pandemic and now stands as the first of its kind in Indian Railways, offering real-time diagnostics and consultation through live streaming of reports such as ECGs and X-rays.

In his address, the General Manager stated that this pioneering initiative will transform patient care by making expert consultation accessible from even the remotest corners of the zone.

During the demonstration, the General Manager witnessed a live tele-consultation from Divisional Railway Hospital, Madurai, and appreciated the coordinated efforts of the Medical and S&T departments in implementing the facility. He directed officials to ensure high-speed internet connectivity across all Health Units for seamless operation and also inspected the Digital Queue Management System and Digital Signage Boards newly installed at the OPD block of Railway Hospital/Perambur.
