ABOUT OPERATING DEPARTMENT
Operating Department is responsible for the freight and passenger train operations over Southern Railway, covering 5087 route kilometers over Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Puducherry and portions of Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh, running over 422 passenger trains and 139 freight trains daily, our operations cover 1992 kilometers of double line and 3095 kilometers of single line routes, involving 4070 kilometers of electrified and 1017 kilometers of non-electrified routes (as on 31/03/2022).
The core functions of the Operating Department include planning for the services, organizing the core running staff management, directing and controlling the 24x7 train facilities, and coordinating between various departments as well as between freight & passenger stake holders and the railway management. This Department Manages & contributes in a big way to the Safety, Economy and Efficiency of all train operations as a prime mover department.
In the year 2021-22, Southern Railway carried about 30.560 Million Tonnes of freight (Earnings Rs.2743.57 Cr) and 339.77 million passengers ( earnings Rs.3539.77 Cr). This surpassed the freight loading of last two years and we are seeing a growth in passenger numbers too.
The Operating Department is headed by the Principal Chief Operations Manager at Chennai Head Quarters and Senior Divisional Operations Managers at the six Divisions of Southern Railway.
