Civil Defence Organisation

Civil Defence Organisation in our Country and Railways has a long history, since its inception during Chinese aggression in 1962. Civil Defence is an important component in the system of total defence.

 

 The aim of Civil Defence (i) To save life & property (ii)to maintain continuity of  production and (iii) to keep the morale of the citizen

Railways being the National Transporter and the largest employer in the country and also by virtue of its omnipresence all over the length and breadth of the country, its strategic importance for any enemy air attack, manmade disasters.

 

       The Railways will form an important target for air attacks/manmade disasters as these are likely;-

 

(i) to dislocate the movement of materials to and from the Industrial  Centres in the Country thereby creating obstacles to production (ii) to lower the morals of Railway staff and thus traffic to a standstill. Hence it is become very essential for the Railways (a) to ensure smooth running of train and uninterrupted flow of traffic (b) to protect vital points e.g. control offices, signal cabins Railway Workshop, Loco sheds, bridges etc., (c) to safeguard Railway personnel and bona fide passengers using Railway facilities.

 

Southern Railway Civil Defence organisation has got a commendable set up of Civil Defence Corps, with strong commitment, great pride in their spirit and zeal to serve the nation at times of needs. The Southern Railway Civil Defence organisation has a strong work force of more than 70 instructors and numerous demonstrators, essential staff. This organisation has conducted 100 Civil Defence Basic courses. This organisation has so far trained more than 5000 employees. Civil Defence personnel have actively involved in relief operations in Lattur (1993-Mahrastra) and Bhuj (2001-Gujarat) Earthquake and also during the Tsunami in 2004 in Kerala and 2018 Kerala floods.

 

The Basic Civil Defence  Course includes theory as well as practical – followed with written examination and  practical tests and best among them were awarded with cash award of Rs.1500/- for 1st Rank, Rs.1000/- for 2nd Rank and Rs.750/- for 3rd Rank holders.
