Energy Saving Efforts of Southern Railway.

100% LED provisions in Railway stations, service buildings and Railway Quarters have been taken up on the Southern Railway and this had resulted in 6.4% savings in energy.

Roof top solar plants have been provided in all the important Railway stations – Chennai Egmore, Coimbatore, Salem, Madurai, Tiruchirappalli, platforms. About 700 KW of solar plants have been commissioned this year through which 3000 units are generated daily which is resulting in savings of Rs. 50 lakhs per year.

8 MW of solar roof tops are to be commissioned in the next 6 months in this Railway.

All traction and non-traction energy efforts are being made to reduce the traction power by regenerative braking. About 14% reduction is obtained by using regenerative braking in Southern Railway.

Head on generation (HOG) is used on 16 pairs of trains reducing the Diesel consumption in power cars since in HOG trains OHE power is directly used for air conditioning and lighting on the trains. Because of this, savings of Rs.51 crores have been achieved.

Southern Railway is also planning to commission wind energy of 10.5 MW in MDU division which is expected to reduce the traction bills substantially.
