                    Southern Railway becomes Unmanned Level Crossing free Zone

Railway Board formulated a policy in the year 2010 to eliminate all the Unmanned LCs from the system to prevent accidents as Unmanned LCs are safety hazard for both Rail and Road users.  Accordingly, in Southern Railway, 1054 No. of existing unmanned level crossings have been planned for elimination by providing alternate mode of crossing the track by provision of Subways, Diversion to adjacent Manned level crossings /Subways /RUBs, by outright closure due to low Road traffic and by Manning.

Hon’ble Minister of Railways set the deadline  for complete elimination of Unmanned Level Crossings across Indian Railways by September, 2018.  In Southern Railway, Palakkad, Thiruvananthapuram and Chennai Divisions became UMLC free during the first quarter of the current year.

As o­n 01.09.2017, there were 311 Unmanned LCs existing o­n Southern Railway system which were targeted to be eliminated by September 2018 as per the directives of Hon’ble MR.


 Accordingly, as o­n 30.09.2018 Southern Railway has eliminated all the remaining    311 unmanned LCs. 

With this, all the Unmanned Level Crossings in the zone have been totally eliminated thus enhancing safety. 

Details of mode of closure of 311 Unmanned LC during  the period from September, 2017 to September, 2018 is given below :
