Southern Railway is observing ‘Swachhta Hi Seva’, a special cleanliness drive from 15thAugust, 2018 to 2nd October, 2018, the 15th Birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.Theme based cleanliness campaigns are organized throughout the zone to provide a pleasing ambience at railway stations, spic ‘n span train interiors, zero-discharge tracks, hygienic catering, potable drinking water and clean railway colonies, offices and work shops.
Officers and their families at the Sterling Railway Officers Colony kick started ‘Swachh Parisar’ (Clean Residential Premises) activities.Shri.R.K.Kulshrestha, General Manager, Shri.Naveen Gulati, Divisional Railway Manager, Chennai and Principal Heads of Departments of Southern Railway and their families engaged in the intensive cleanliness drive.The members of Southern Railway Women’s Welfare Association (HQ) led by Smt.Mansi Kulshrestha, President also joined hands in the campaign and cleaned up the colony and beautified the park in the residential complex.Massive tree plantation drive was organised which saw active participation from Officers and SRWWO members.
As part ofSwachh Samwad (Cleanliness dialogue/Public) , seminars were organised at Chennai Central, Chennai Egmore, Tambaram and Chengalpattu railway stations to foster awareness among cleaning staff on sanitation and upkeep of premises. Painting competitions were organised at Jolarpettai, Perambur and Basin Bridge in which a number of railway school kids and passengers participated.Feedback from passengers about the cleanliness level at station was received.Antilittering notices were distributed to sensitize commuters at various stations over Chennai Division.
Swachh (Clean) Station drives were conducted at various stations over Chennai Division.Senior officials oversaw the cleaning operations, functionality of mechanised cleaning equipments, ensured the provision of protective gear for cleaning staff and segregation of waste by providing separate dustbins.
College students from many colleges in Chennai volunteered for cleaning of railway stations.Students of Ethiraj College for Women, Chennai participated in cleanliness drive at Chennai Egmore .Students ofJain College, Chennai participated in cleaning activities at Mambalam and Youth Red Cross from GRT Institute of Engineering & Technologyat Tiruttani railway station.
Swachh Rail Gaadi (Clean Train) drives focused on inspection and intensive cleaning of coaches at Coaching Depots and Train Care Centre, Basin Bridge.On Board inspections of trains were carried out by nominated officers.Quality of linen was checked and action was initiated based on the feedback received from passengers.
